02: Understanding Who God Is – Teaching Plan

Key Thought: True reverence for God is inspired by a sense of His infinite greatness and a realization of His presence. With this sense of the Unseen, every heart should be deeply impressed..

1. Have a volunteer read Exodus 3:4, 5, 12-15.

A. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.

B. What was the significance of Moses having to take off his sandals in the presence of God? Are we supposed to be barefoot in the sanctuary?

C. Personal Application:  What elements of worship has God required of us that people do not follow or are lax in doing?  Share.

D. Case Study:  One of your relatives states, “Why did God tell Moses they would worship Him “on this mountain”?  Is the place of worship just as important as the worship?” How would you respond to your relative?

2. Have a volunteer read Exodus 20:1-6.

A. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.

B. What is the significance of God reminding the people that He delivered them out of Egypt – the house of bondage before giving them the law?

C. Personal Application:  What bondage has God delivered you from? How does obedience to God’s law keep us from being put back into bondage?

D. Case Study:  One of your friends states, ”If the Ten Commandments are for all people in all ages, then obedience is an integral part of man’s covenant with God. Where in the New Testament does it indicate that obedience is part of the new covenant with Jesus?” How would you respond to your friend?

(Note: Example: Hebrews 8:10, 10:16)

3. Have a volunteer read Exodus 32:1-6.

A. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.

B. Why did the people ask Aaron to make them gods to go before them? What lessons can we learn from this incident?

C. Personal Application:  What are some of the idols worshipped in our society? How do they interfere with the worship of the true God?

D. Case Study: One of your neighbors states, “How are we supposed to regard some of the “new” ways in worship in the sanctuary? Does the type, style, and form of music and the deportment of the worshippers make a difference in God’s acceptance of that worship?”  How would you respond to your neighbor?

4. Have a volunteer read Exodus 33:18-23.

A. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.

B. Why did Moses ask to see God’s glory? What did He want to learn?.

C. Personal Application :  what can we do to see God’s glory and to know Him  Better? Can our worship and the way we worship help?  Share.

D. Case Study:  Think of one person who needs to hear a message from this week’s lesson. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.

(Note: “Truth that is not lived, that is not imparted, loses its life-giving power, its healing virtue. Its blessings can be retained only as it is shared.”  MH p. 149)

02: Understanding Who God Is – Teaching Plan — 6 Comments

  1. For me, the question about who God is seems to be pivotal to the whole topic of worship. It is a question that Jesus asked His disciples (Mat 16:13) and something that He said was the key to salvation (John 17:3). It is central to the controversy that started in Heaven and something that angels have continuing interest in (1 Pet 1:12).
Worship establishes a relationship between vassal and Lord. What we do in worship says a lot about what that relationship is, however, if we have no idea of who the one we worship is how can we ever hope to establish a proper relationship and the accompanying worship?

  2. Understanding who GOD Is, is the first step to discover true worship. Tyler is right and i agree 100%. True worship is dependent on how one understands who GOD is. Many a time we claim to understand God, but we live opposite of true worship. At school, work, home all we do shows how we understand who God is. So worship is living the life of Jesus in you every day, every time.

  3. I joined sda from catholic and day by day i continue to understand who God is and what he can do.however i have a challenge attending church every sabath because of job related issues.help me pray to overcome this block

  4. I am a member of the Auction Street West End, Seventh-day Adventist Church in Kimberly, and we are planning to greate a website for our church can you provide me with information how to get strated and how to set up our programme.
