I recently finished a biography of John Wycliffe, 14th century herald of the reformation. I learned some fascinating info I had not previously known. Like the prophet Daniel, Wycliffe left home as a teen, never to return. John Wycliffe was not merely the first to provide, with his assistants, the entire Scriptures in English, but he was really the first to seriously question the Scriptural authority for the Catholic doctrine of transubstantiation and the infallibility of the pope. Wycliffe was [...]

[Read Part 1 here, if you have not read it.]
And he swore an oath in the name of the one who lives forever and ever, who created heaven and everything in it, the earth and everything in it, and the sea and everything in it.  (Rev 10:6 NSRV)1

Who created the earth?  Who spoke creation into existence?  (Heb 1, Col 1, John 1)  Here Christ references the six literal, empirical, historical 24-hour days of creation, culminating with a literal 24-hour Sabbath [...]

Can we find the picture of our religious ancestors’ birth in Scripture?  Our Adventist pioneers, those intrepid spiritual ancestors who set a pretty high bar in terms of mission, priorities, and love for their Savior, saw themselves in Revelation 10.

So I’d like us to take a historical approach to Revelation 10. Oh, the inroads of higher criticism may have beckoned some to different exegetical interpretations of Revelation 10.  But our pioneers, including Ellen White, were historicists.  And dare I say [...]

Was Ellen White Green?

Adams River

Was Ellen White an environmentalist? Was she concerned with Planet Earth, with ecology, recycling, contaminants, the effects of materialism? Although Ellen White lived most of her life in the nineteenth century before plastics were invented, before nuclear power, before nitrates and anthropogenic chemicals contaminated our rivers and streams, and before greed for oil drove much of the world’s ethos, she nonetheless was a strong advocate for care of the earth.

Ellen White’s environmental consciousness came from two sources: The Scriptures, and [...]

Why She’s Still Relevant

Ellen White gets it! She understands the twenty-first-century heart-cry to know and experience God, to do something meaningful and enduring in life, and to grapple with issues of poverty, alienation, health, education, diversity, inclusiveness, integrity and eternity.

Yet she’s dead.

The principles she espoused transcend time and are more pertinent and applicable than ever.

Yes, there are myriad books today on health, spirituality, life balance and eschatology. But the reason I believe Ellen White cuts through the nebulous maze of conflicting theories and [...]

Where Goeth Adventist Youth Ministries?

luther-warren-henry-fenner-s

In 1879, teens Luther Warren and Harry Fenner wanted to do evangelism for Jesus. Praying together often for ideas and vision, young Fenner and Warren initiated the first Adventist youth group. Their Michigan Adventist Youth Society was successful from the beginning, and soon spread to other conferences.

In the early years of Adventism, youth work was often initiated by youth for the purpose of sharing Christ with their non-Christian friends, first in their own communities. Soon, their focus expanded, and youth [...]

Whom Does Jesus Call?

Sometimes we tend to think that Jesus only commissions certain kinds of people, but Matthew 28:19-20 sounds like a pretty inclusive mandate to me. No one is excluded from going into all the world to teach the gospel, no hand is to be held back that could be involved in service and outreach. Jesus commissions all of us! Without waiting for committee action or heated dialogue, Jesus ascended into heaven, expecting His adherents’ complete obedience to His command. 1

Does It Matter How Long God Took to Create?

Several of my young adult friends have messaged me recently with comments like, “I consider myself a Creationist because I believe that God created the earth. Why does it matter if He created it in seven literal contiguous 24-hour periods, or over millions of years? Either way, He created.”

Character of God

It’s a good question, and deserves a thoughtful answer. My first point has to do with the character of the God we
