Bang! Bang! You’re Dead! — 3 Comments

  1. Stephen, as usual I enjoyed your article. You cover so many things and I can't comment on all of them so I will pick what I think is the most important and comment on that.

I am thankful to Paul who took time to explain the administration of the gifts of the Holy Spirit in 1 Corinthians 12. He presents the gifts as being distributed in such a way that each individual receives a set of gifts that are different than what anyone else gets. We do not all receive the same strengths in the same areas of service. Paul asks several questions: "Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?" (1 Cor. 12:29-30 NKJV). The obvious answer is, of course not!

For in fact the body is not one member but many. If the foot should say, "Because I am not a hand, I am not of the body," is it therefore not of the body? And if the ear should say, "Because I am not an eye, I am not of the body," is it therefore not of the body? If the whole body were an eye, where would be the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where would be the smelling? But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body just as He pleased. And if they were all one member, where would the body be? (1 Cor. 12:14-19 NKJV).

It is only as each one fulfills his appointed place in the church according to the gifts he/she has been given that the body becomes the fullness of Christ. As we work together and use our gifts in an organized way the body becomes a functional whole just like a business that has different jobs in it; each one is needed if it is to work efficiently.

I believe we all should seek to be a blessing in this world of sin and woe, however, I can't seem to do the job other people do besides my desire is not in the direction they are in. I am an introverted social klutz who feels very awkward in social work yet there are things which I feel comfortable with and can do and in that way I can be a blessing along with the others that do something different.

There are, in fact, some things we all can do. We all can be cheerful and have sympathy. We may not be able to preach or give a Bible study but we all can be hearers and sometimes when a person is hurting hearing is far more beneficial than the constant discharge of words we often get involved in. Sometimes something as simple as a cheerful smile can do more good than a whole sermon. Yes, healing happens in many different ways and a lot of those simple ways are things that any one of us can do as a representative of Jesus, the great physician.

      • Tyler, I like how you were being so transparent; and what you said to me made a lot of sense. And put things into perspective for me! Thank you also Stephen, for the article! As a young guy, this makes sense for me!
