Be it admitted from the start that we do not know the day on which our Lord was born. His early biographers did not think it of sufficient importance to record. 1
We do not know why the church chose to celebrate that birth when they did. Perhaps to stay concealed from Roman sight, perhaps to assimilate converts more easily, perhaps because old traditions told them that it was the day, after all. But they chose better than they knew, when [...]
Law isn’t very popular in our society – especially moral law. Doing your “own thing” is promoted in popular media and commercials. Postmodern culture is allergic to absolutes, and laws are absolutes.
Law even seems to have a bad reputation in Christian circles. After all, Paul said that the Law is no longer needed after a person comes to Christ, right? (See Gal. 3:24) We are now free in Christ – free from law!
And that has some Adventists defending the Law [...]
Previously, we asked the question, “What is a Covenant?” Now let’s explore some covenants in the Bible.1
Long before sin entered this world through Adam and Eve, God made a covenant with Himself concerning a plan to deal with the sin problem. It was a comprehensive plan that would settle the controversy between Christ and Satan and provide a way to save sinners. Even though it was a one-sided covenant involving two parties, it still required acceptance by the sinner in [...]
“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.” Romans 1:20
People have always been able to learn something about God from what God has created. But as science has advanced, and has revealed more and ever more of the once-hidden secrets of the physical and biological worlds, we can appreciate more deeply the wonderful creative power of God.
“If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations on earth.” Deuteronomy 28:1, NIV
Many people like to speak of “the good old days” as an idyllic time of innocence that was free of the stresses and controversies of modern life. If asked, most would willingly paint a verbal picture of a time when simple virtues were paramount and vices were [...]
In this sin-ridden world we, keeping a promise is not looked upon with much respect. Therefore, in order for society to insure that promises would be kept, man has devised simple ways to enforce such things. Two of those ways are the ancient covenant and today’s contract.
The difference between the two of them basically lies in the range of implementation and the way they are ratified or sealed. A contract is usually between two parties and can be either one-sided [...]
Bible students know from Paul’s own testimony that he was well educated. “I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel” (Act 22:3 NKJV). Luke also has this comment concerning Gamaliel, “Then one in the council stood up, a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law held in respect by all the people” (Act 5:34 NKJV) and from the SDA Commentary we learn:
“Gamaliel was the [...]
Several of my young adult friends have messaged me recently with comments like, “I consider myself a Creationist because I believe that God created the earth. Why does it matter if He created it in seven literal contiguous 24-hour periods, or over millions of years? Either way, He created.”
Character of God
It’s a good question, and deserves a thoughtful answer. My first point has to do with the character of the God we
The Seventh-day Adventist church is a prophetic movement which God raised up for the furtherance of the gospel after centuries of apostasy by His church. This makes us special in terms of responsibility. We’re not special because of any intrinsic value that we have, but we have a special message and we are a called people.
The primary purpose of the Seventh-day Adventist church is to proclaim the everlasting gospel of Jesus Christ, which includes a remembrance of the Sabbath as [...]
The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore, when your eye is good, your whole body also is full of light. But when your eye is bad, your body also is full of darkness” (Luke 11:34 NKJV).
This text has to do with our perception of truth, how we view things. This is important because Jesus said, “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden” (Mat 5:14 NKJV). Then within [...]
