Justification: Just Declared Right or Made Right?

While working as a supervisor for a world-wide delivery company, I had an employee who was just a few minutes late every morning. I asked my supervisor what I should do to get him to be on time. His answer shocked me. “Change his start time a few minutes so he will be on time.”

At first that did not seem right to me. Why change the standard to make a wrong person look right? My boss explained to me that [...]

What do you think of when you hear the word “Jubilee”? Did you know that word is used in the Bible?

“Then on the Day of Atonement in the fiftieth year, blow the ram’s horn loud and long throughout the land. Set this year apart as holy, a time to proclaim freedom throughout the land for all who live there. It will be a jubilee year for you, when each of you may return to the land that belonged to your [...]

Sabbath – The Reminder of the Evidence

Andrew Legall recommended this video, writing that “it changed my view of the Sabbath radically.”

This conversation was recorded 30 years ago by the late Graham Maxwell, professor of New Testament studies at Loma Linda University, and Louis Venden of the PUC church. It is from a series of Friday evening programs called, “Conversations About God.” If you’ve never heard Graham Maxwell speak, you’re in for a treat – not just because of his marvellous speaking voice, but also because of how he [...]

“It is finished” John 19:30

When Jesus cried out these last words, He gave up His breath, and rested in the tomb on Sabbath. Four thousand years earlier, He had finished creating the world and rested on the Sabbath. Adam and Eve rested too on that very first Sabbath, though I don’t think they were really tired. They were not in need of physical rest. I can imagine God walking them through the garden that first Sabbath and showing them all [...]

“Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall [...]

Whom Will You Believe?

There are many opinions that society wants us to believe: Climate is changing. Climate isn’t changing. Capitalism is good. Capitalism is bad. The internet/TV/video games/music are evil. Nothing’s evil; it’s all in how you use it. And don’t even get me started on what we should or shouldn’t eat or drink!

Mostly though, opinions are opinions and whether or not we agree is not going to make much difference in the long run. But underneath everything there are two beliefs that [...]

Would Jesus Hang Out With Gay People Too?

Would Jesus hang out with homosexuals? Is there a way we can know?1

We know that Jesus associated with the outcasts of his day. Luke 15:1-2 is very clear that he not only associated with tax collectors and sinners, he ate with them. He went to their dinner parties (Matt 11: 19) to such an extent he was called a glutton and winebibber.

Read Isaiah 53:4, Matthew 8:17, and John 9:1-3. In what way are we to understand these texts? What questions do they raise? What hope do they offer us?

In antiquity, sickness was considered the result of sinful actions. (And even today, who hasn’t at times-even if only for a moment-wondered if illness, either their own or that of a loved one, wasn’t brought on as a punishment for sin?) In the book of Job, his [...]

Beyond the Metaphors – Ultimate Sacrifice

In 2006, a gunman walked into an Amish school. The teacher ran for help, and 13-year old Marian Fisher realized help would not arrive before the gunman started shooting. To buy time for the other students, this young girl told the gunman, “shoot me first.”  This young girl was prepared to make a sacrifice that a few older men on the Titanic shied away from. She made a great sacrifice as Jesus said,
