Does It Matter How Long God Took to Create?

Several of my young adult friends have messaged me recently with comments like, “I consider myself a Creationist because I believe that God created the earth. Why does it matter if He created it in seven literal contiguous 24-hour periods, or over millions of years? Either way, He created.”

Character of God

It’s a good question, and deserves a thoughtful answer. My first point has to do with the character of the God we

The Sabbath and the Marriage Bed

One of the most popular questions that is posed concerning Sabbath observance is whether or not it is proper for a husband and wife to engage in sexual relations during the Sabbath hours. This question was raised in response to a posting I made on the significance of the Sabbath.  (Also found on SSNET.org)

Although the Bible doesn’t answer this question directly, it does provide some key guidelines and principles that can help each couple come to a mutually satisfaction resolution.

Significance of the Sabbath
avatar

Too often, discussions about the importance or relevance of the Sabbath focus on what to do (or not to do) on the Sabbath. This inevitably leads to arguments which are usually unproductive.

Instead of the Do/Don’t aspect of the Sabbath, let us briefly consider its significance and relevance to us today.

The Sabbath reminds us about who God is…

The Sabbath is not just about Creation (which happened a long time ago). Yes, God is the Creator, and remembering that is very important. […]

Seventh-day Adventists – a Special People?
avatar

The Seventh-day Adventist church is a prophetic movement which God raised up for the furtherance of the gospel after centuries of apostasy by His church. This makes us special in terms of responsibility. We’re not special because of any intrinsic value that we have, but we have a special message and we are a called people.

The primary purpose of the Seventh-day Adventist church is to proclaim the everlasting gospel of Jesus Christ, which includes a remembrance of the Sabbath as […]

Keeping the Main Thing the Main Thing

The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore, when your eye is good, your whole body also is full of light. But when your eye is bad, your body also is full of darkness” (Luke 11:34 NKJV).

This text has to do with our perception of truth, how we view things. This is important because Jesus said, “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden” (Mat 5:14 NKJV). Then within […]

Personal Worship
avatar

In a previous post I commented on three types of worship, including personal worship, and some have asked me to expand on the latter. Personal worship has come under some scrutiny recently with the rise in interest in “spiritual formation.”  The topic is quite relevant to the lesson on Conformity, Compromise and Crisis in Worship because it touches on the issues of conformity and compromise. Rather than criticize the compromise, let me emphasize those aspects of personal worship that I think […]

What Are We Compromising?
avatar

Before we take this week’s lesson title (Conformity, Compromise and Crisis in Worship) as an excuse to proscribe forms of worship that we do not like, we need to consider worship in its wider context. There are three aspects of worship (Yes I am well aware that my classification is not the only one but this one helps me)

Personal worship: this is the time that we spend by ourselves in prayer, study and meditation
Community worship: this is the time that […]

Evolution of the Bible?
avatar

Friday morning I woke up, turned on my computer, looked at the news headlines and got a shock. One of the headlines read, “In Jerusalem, scholars trace Bible’s evolution.” The first two paragraphs were most unsettling:

JERUSALEM (AP) — A dull-looking chart projected on the wall of a university office in Jerusalem displayed a revelation that would startle many readers of the Old Testament: the sacred text that people revered in the past was not the same one we study today.
An […]

Jesus, the Sustainer of My Life
avatar

We often think of God as the creator and the one who keeps us alive. We look at Him as the one who blesses us by supplying all our needs and many of our wants. But how often do we really think about the extent that God is involved with us? The writer of Hebrews speaks of Jesus as the Son of God in this way, “who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, […]

Ordained as Priests

“Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil;
Who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness;
Who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!
Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes
and clever in their own sight!” Isaiah 5:20-21, NASB

Today, most Christian denominations are hierarchical in structure with layers of clergy administering other clergy from the top down until reaching the level of the local church where a carefully controlled laity works in secular occupations to support that structure.

Some laity and […]
