Plate-Spinning

Do you remember that old circus trick? The performer would have about five sticks standing up straight and he’d put a plate on the end of each of the sticks and start it spinning so that the centrifugal force would hold the plate up and on the end of the stick. As long as the plate kept spinning at a reasonable speed, the plate stayed up, but if it slowed down too much, it [...]

sandburr

I’m not sure what you call them in your neck of the woods, but where I grew up they were called sticker burs – little globes of pricklies that can cause large amounts of pain to the barefooted and the four-footed. I’ve heard them called sand burs. They’re not like the polite but troublesome burs that are like Velcro. Sticker burs are just mean.

I’m a barefoot person. My shoes come off at the earliest possible second after I’ve walked through [...]

In his book, The Three Edwards, Thomas Costain tells the story of three kings of England from 1272 to 1377 all of whom were conveniently and confusingly named Edward. According to a well-used illustration from Costain’s book, in the mid to late 1300′s, there was a Duke Raynald III. He was extremely overweight. He was so fat that people didn’t call him by his name any more. They called him by the nickname, Crassus, which means fat in Latin. So [...]

He Grew the Tree He Knew Would be Used to Make the Old Rugged Cross

Around a hundred years ago, when I was a teenager, a country singer by the name of Barbara Mandrell, sang, “He grew the tree that He knew would be used to make the old rugged cross.” The song brought out, that even at creation Jesus was planning our redemption. This song could not be any truer.

In Genesis 2:17 God says, “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not [...]

Where does morality come from? How do humans decide how to behave? As a Christian we see that moral behavior is a product of my belief in a Creator God. But what if a person does not believe in God? What dictates his morality?

In a sermon on “Evolution and the Christian Faith,”  Phillip E. Johnson notes:

“‘If there is no Creator who has a purpose for your life, then there is no such thing as [...]

Dominos, Sabbath School and Controversy!

Dominos

Dominos is a game played around the world, but I have found lately that it is not played the same way around the world. I was raised in Oklahoma, where my grandmother taught me how to play, by playing off the ends as well as the sides, so that you are going in four different directions. (As seen in the picture) You score when all four sides add up to a 5, like 5, 10, 15, 20 and so on. For [...]

Once upon a time, the world happened, possibly with the help of some Higher Being. Finally, men and women came along. They began to worship the Higher Being and to tell and to write down stories about It (the Higher Being). In some of the stories, the Higher Being was called God. One of the stories described how some of the people thought God created the world and all the animals and people in [...]

“Not I But Christ” OR “Me Plus Christ”

There are probably plenty of  reasons why God waited till He had created everything else, before He created man. Obviously the environment was not inhabitable for mankind earlier, but I would like to suggest another reason. If man had been around while God was creating the earth, he might have come up with the notion that he actually had a part in creation.

It is the same with Calvary. Sure, mankind was there, but everything that was good was because of [...]

What Science Can and Cannot Do

MODERN SCIENCE has accomplished marvels that seemed like impossible dreams a few decades ago. Albert Einstein determined that matter could be converted into energy, and the atomic scientists did it.

It now seems common place to have nuclear power plants producing electricity. Science has come up with the knowledge and technology that made it possible to send men to the moon and back, to transplant hearts from one person to another, and to cure diseases [...]

I entered the ICU in a Tampa hospital to pray with a family who was about to lose their mother. The mother was a Christian. The daughter was near believing, but I soon found out where her two sons stood. When the daughter announced I was here to pray, the two grown sons said, [...]
