    • Chibueze, first let us look at the entire paragraph that statement comes from:

God never asks us to believe, without giving sufficient evidence upon which to base our faith. His existence, His character, the truthfulness of His word, are all established by testimony that appeals to our reason; and this testimony is abundant. Yet God has never removed the possibility of doubt. Our faith must rest upon evidence, not demonstration. Those who wish to doubt will have opportunity; while those who really desire to know the truth will find plenty of evidence on which to rest their faith. (Steps to Christ 105.2)

I believe Ellen White was simply reiterating what the Bible says concerning the basis of our belief. "For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead" (Rom. 1:20 NKJV). Unlike the Jews who demanded a physical sign (which they ignored anyway) our religion is a faith based one that does not depend on physical demonstration but on evidence from various sources.

Concerning what Hebrews says, "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen" (Heb. 11:1 NKJV). Do you refuse to believe that air exists because you can't see it? On what basis do you believe what you do about the existence of air? To me it is the same kind of analogy that Jesus used with Nicodemus when speaking of the Holy Spirit which we can't see either, "The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit" (Jn. 3:8 NKJV).

We cannot prove the many things we believe but we have a lot of evidence from many sources concerning them. Why do we believe in Heaven? Has anyone seen it? What proof do we have that Jesus existed 2000 years ago? You see we have circumstantial, historical and literary evidence about what we do not now see even though we can't absolutely prove those things. The same goes for electrons in atomic theory, we can't see them but there is a lot of evidence that they actually exist. That is our life here in a confined environment; a life that is based on faith and expectation. That is the reason why we wait at bus stops for a bus we can't see and why we plant seeds in the ground hoping for an abundant harvest when we don't know what the future holds. We do those things because of past experience which is the evidence we have that what we expect is actually going to happen.

To the writer of Hebrews that is what drove and supported all the righteous people in the past - the promises of something better which they could not literally see.

  4. Happy Sabbath

    Fly me away Lord,
    on your wings,
    carry my load Lord,
    your praises I will sing.
    When I am down Lord,
    pick me up,
    stand me firm Lord,
    on your rock,
waves may crash and try to shake me,
but my roots are in-bedded in thee.
    Tears may fall,
like a river that runs free,
    but your hands
    will tend to me.
Brush away my worries and fears,
keep me standing all these long years,
in your Love I will ever more be,
    standing tall and worshiping thee.

  5. God's love for mankind will never die out, considering wronging Him by way of our disobedience to Him, and Him taking our place to suffer a bloody condition we should have suffered.

God indeed is love, and loving. How, I pray that we would realize all that love, and live truly the way God needs us to. Amen!
