Sarah’s Covenant or Hagar’s?

“…the women represent two covenants. One covenant is from Mount Sinai and bears children who are to be slaves…” Galatians 4:24, NIV

So much has been written and said about two covenants in Christendom that it has become trite. However, this week’s lesson compels us to revisit the dichotomy, albeit with oft repeated assumptions and interpretive constraints framed by extra-Biblical sources. Nonetheless, we shall try to inject some fresh perspectives into this topic.

While Paul writes of two covenants in Galatians, many […]

God’s Law: The One, the Two, the Ten and the Many

law

Law isn’t very popular in our society – especially moral law. Doing your “own thing” is promoted in popular media and commercials. Postmodern culture is allergic to absolutes, and laws are absolutes.

Law even seems to have a bad reputation in Christian circles. After all, Paul said that the Law is no longer needed after a person comes to Christ, right? (See Gal. 3:24) We are now free in Christ – free from law!

Several teachers at an African secondary school were visiting one afternoon when one of them picked a stone carving out of his pocket and handed it around.

“This is an idol,” he said. “My yard boy gave it to me. He thinks this piece of rock has a lot of power.”

The head missionary in charge of the school came to his feet. “Give it to me,” he said.

The teacher […]

The Protestant work ethic has combined with the Internet and roaming devices like the iPad to fill our lives with work. I no longer have to work from 9 till 5! I can start at 4.00am,  and I can work till midnight. I can be at home, shopping, on holiday, with the grand-kids and I can log into my College network and do some work. One of my tasks is to administer Moodle – the College’s on-line learning system. I […]
