As I sit here, comfortable, in my climate-controlled home, my glass of clean, drinkable water beside me, I cannot, in any way, describe myself as persecuted. I believe I could describe myself as “bothered” sometimes, but not persecuted.

I don’t believe I can think of anyone I know that could be described as being persecuted right now.
Persecuted is defined as, “to pursue with harassing or oppressive treatment, especially because of religion, race, or beliefs; harass [...]
“…I will come back and take you to be with me…” John 14:3. NIV
When I was a child, I always looked forward to visits from Grandma. While visits might coincide with a birthday or a holiday, Grandma could make any day a holiday just by being there. She would greet me and my siblings with hugs and kisses. Then she would ask us how we were doing in school. Eventually she would step back and open her purse and bring [...]
It was an unusual meeting taking place entirely in the minds of those attending.

“Jesus is coming again in seven days.” One of the faithful who had seen Jesus after the resurrection was sure He would return right away. A week would be about right.
“He’s coming on October 22, 1844.” A young Adventist believer spoke with conviction. “The Bible says so.”
“We got the date wrong. He’s coming in 1845.”
“He’s coming 120 years after the Great Disappointment of 1844, just the Flood [...]
I have a theory that the followers of God have always had a job to do – a mission to accomplish – and, following my tendency to oversimplify things, I have concluded that we can narrow all the possibilities down to three specific tasks.

From my perspective, the way the Bible tells God’s story fits pretty neatly into this framework.
The first role I believe God wants us to fill is that of Companion. God created [...]
I recently met a woman whose husband died suddenly and tragically less than a year ago. They had been together over forty years and had been high school sweethearts. She has the most amazing attitude. Yes she misses him terribly, but she knows that she will see her husband again. In fact, they had promised each other long ago that if they didn’t see Jesus come together, they would meet at the Tree of Life. I’ve known other folks who [...]
What does it mean to “live like an Adventist?” Here is what inspiration tells us about this name.
“No name which we can take will be appropriate but that which accords with our profession and expresses our faith and marks us a peculiar people. The name Seventh-day Adventist is a standing rebuke to the Protestant world. Here is the line of distinction between the worshipers of God and those who worship the beast and receive his mark. The great conflict is [...]
The death of infants and children seems terrible because the precious ones are gone without having lived a life for Jesus. And, of course, the death of parents and hard-working adults who are giving family members a livelihood and taking care of others are heroes we don’t want to lose.

But as we age, the death of adults who are approaching the category of “aged” is painful because we long to be close to those [...]
“Robby Robins was an Air Force pilot during the first Iraq war. After his 300th mission, he was surprised to be given permission to immediately pull his crew together and fly his plane home. They flew across the ocean to Massachusetts and then had a long drive to western Pennsylvania. They drove all night, and when his buddies dropped him off at his driveway just after sun-up, there was a big banner across the garage—‘Welcome Home Dad!’“How did they know? [...]
“When is Jesus coming? Do you know?”1
“No. Do you?”
“Mom.” Robert took a breath. “It says right here that He’s coming quickly. Those were His own words. He said, ‘I am coming quickly.’ ”
“That’s good enough for me.”
“Mom. Other places in the Bible it says Jesus is coming soon. Some guys at school laughed at me because I told them that. He’s not coming soon, Mom. Already it’s been forever. Thousands of years since He said that. What gives?”
“Does God look at time [...]
As Seventh-day Adventists celebrates over 150 years of our name, one important question comes to mind, concerning our name. The “Advent” part pertaining to the Second Coming. Is the Second Coming still on? Are we still planning on it? Is it still a part of who we are?
Growing up as a Seventh-day Adventist I remember hearing people talk about how Jesus was surely coming in the next five years. We thought for sure the oil crisis in the 70’s was [...]
