Sunday Readings
3rd of March

I Will Arise

Psalm 18:3–18 (ASV)

3I will call upon Jehovah, who is worthy to be praised:

So shall I be saved from mine enemies.

4The cords of death compassed me,

And the floods of ungodliness made me afraid.

5The cords of Sheol were round about me;

The snares of death came upon me.

6In my distress I called upon Jehovah,

And cried unto my God:

He heard my voice out of his temple,

And my cry before him came into his ears.

7Then the earth shook and trembled;

The foundations also of the mountains quaked

And were shaken, because he was wroth.

8There went up a smoke out of his nostrils,

And fire out of his mouth devoured:

Coals were kindled by it.

9He bowed the heavens also, and came down;

And thick darkness was under his feet.

10And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly;

Yea, he soared upon the wings of the wind.

11He made darkness his hiding-place, his pavilion round about him,

Darkness of waters, thick clouds of the skies.

12At the brightness before him his thick clouds passed,

Hailstones and coals of fire.

13Jehovah also thundered in the heavens,

And the Most High uttered his voice,

Hailstones and coals of fire.

14And he sent out his arrows, and scattered them;

Yea, lightnings manifold, and discomfited them.

15Then the channels of waters appeared,

And the foundations of the world were laid bare,

At thy rebuke, O Jehovah,

At the blast of the breath of thy nostrils.

16He sent from on high, he took me;

He drew me out of many waters.

17He delivered me from my strong enemy,

And from them that hated me; for they were too mighty for me.

18They came upon me in the day of my calamity;

But Jehovah was my stay.

Psalm 41:1–3 (ASV)

1Blessed is he that considereth the poor:

Jehovah will deliver him in the day of evil.

2Jehovah will preserve him, and keep him alive,

And he shall be blessed upon the earth;

And deliver not thou him unto the will of his enemies.

3Jehovah will support him upon the couch of languishing:

Thou makest all his bed in his sickness.

Deuteronomy 15:7–11 (ASV)

7If there be with thee a poor man, one of thy brethren, within any of thy gates in thy land which Jehovah thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not harden thy heart, nor shut thy hand from thy poor brother; 8but thou shalt surely open thy hand unto him, and shalt surely lend him sufficient for his need in that which he wanteth. 9Beware that there be not a base thought in thy heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand; and thine eye be evil against thy poor brother, and thou give him nought; and he cry unto Jehovah against thee, and it be sin unto thee. 10Thou shalt surely give him, and thy heart shall not be grieved when thou givest unto him; because that for this thing Jehovah thy God will bless thee in all thy work, and in all that thou puttest thy hand unto. 11For the poor will never cease out of the land: therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt surely open thy hand unto thy brother, to thy needy, and to thy poor, in thy land.

Psalm 82:1–8 (ASV)

1God standeth in the congregation of God;

He judgeth among the gods.

2How long will ye judge unjustly,

And respect the persons of the wicked? Selah

3Judge the poor and fatherless:

Do justice to the afflicted and destitute.

4Rescue the poor and needy:

Deliver them out of the hand of the wicked.

5They know not, neither do they understand;

They walk to and fro in darkness:

All the foundations of the earth are shaken.

6I said, Ye are gods,

And all of you sons of the Most High.

7Nevertheless ye shall die like men,

And fall like one of the princes.

8Arise, O God, judge the earth;

For thou shalt inherit all the nations.

Psalm 96:6–10 (ASV)

6Honor and majesty are before him:

Strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.

7Ascribe unto Jehovah, ye kindreds of the peoples,

Ascribe unto Jehovah glory and strength.

8Ascribe unto Jehovah the glory due unto his name:

Bring an offering, and come into his courts.

9Oh worship Jehovah in holy array:

Tremble before him, all the earth.

10Say among the nations, Jehovah reigneth:

The world also is established that it cannot be moved:

He will judge the peoples with equity

Psalm 99:1–4 (ASV)

1Jehovah reigneth; let the peoples tremble:

He sitteth above the cherubim; let the earth be moved.

2Jehovah is great in Zion;

And he is high above all the peoples.

3Let them praise thy great and terrible name:

Holy is he.

4The king’s strength also loveth justice;

Thou dost establish equity;

Thou executest justice and righteousness in Jacob.

Romans 8:34 (ASV)

34who is he that condemneth? It is Christ Jesus that died, yea rather, that was raised from the dead, who is at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.

Psalm 12:5 (ASV)

5Because of the oppression of the poor, because of the sighing of the needy,

Now will I arise, saith Jehovah;

I will set him in the safety he panteth for.

2 Peter 3:9–15 (ASV)

9The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some count slackness; but is longsuffering to you-ward, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 10But the day of the Lord will come as a thief; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall be dissolved with fervent heat, and the earth and the works that are therein shall be burned up. 11Seeing that these things are thus all to be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy living and godliness, 12looking for and earnestly desiring the coming of the day of God, by reason of which the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? 13But, according to his promise, we look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. 14Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for these things, give diligence that ye may be found in peace, without spot and blameless in his sight. 15And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also, according to the wisdom given to him, wrote unto you;

Psalm 96:13 (ASV)

13Before Jehovah; for he cometh,

For he cometh to judge the earth:

He will judge the world with righteousness,

And the peoples with his truth.

Psalm 98:9 (ASV)

9Before Jehovah; for he cometh to judge the earth:

He will judge the world with righteousness,

And the peoples with equity.

Psalm 89:14 (ASV)

14Righteousness and justice are the foundation of thy throne:

Lovingkindness and truth go before thy face.

Psalm 97:2 (ASV)

2Clouds and darkness are round about him:

Righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.

Psalm 7:6–17 (ASV)

6Arise, O Jehovah, in thine anger;

Lift up thyself against the rage of mine adversaries,

And awake for me; thou hast commanded judgment.

7And let the congregation of the peoples compass thee about;

And over them return thou on high.

8Jehovah ministereth judgment to the peoples:

Judge me, O Jehovah, according to my righteousness, and to mine integrity that is in me.

9Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end, but establish thou the righteous:

For the righteous God trieth the minds and hearts.

10My shield is with God,

Who saveth the upright in heart.

11God is a righteous judge,

Yea, a God that hath indignation every day.

12If a man turn not, he will whet his sword;

He hath bent his bow, and made it ready;

13He hath also prepared for him the instruments of death;

He maketh his arrows fiery shafts.

14Behold, he travaileth with iniquity;

Yea, he hath conceived mischief, and brought forth falsehood.

15He hath made a pit, and digged it,

And is fallen into the ditch which he made.

16His mischief shall return upon his own head,

And his violence shall come down upon his own pate.

17I will give thanks unto Jehovah according to his righteousness,

And will sing praise to the name of Jehovah Most High.

Psalm 76:3–9 (ASV)

3There he brake the arrows of the bow;

The shield, and the sword, and the battle. Selah

4Glorious art thou and excellent,

From the mountains of prey.

5The stouthearted are made a spoil,

They have slept their sleep;

And none of the men of might have found their hands.

6At thy rebuke, O God of Jacob,

Both chariot and horse are cast into a deep sleep.

7Thou, even thou, art to be feared;

And who may stand in thy sight when once thou art angry?

8Thou didst cause sentence to be heard from heaven;

The earth feared, and was still,

9When God arose to judgment,

To save all the meek of the earth. Selah

Psalm 76:12 (ASV)

12He will cut off the spirit of princes:

He is terrible to the kings of the earth.

Psalm 144:5–7 (ASV)

5Bow thy heavens, O Jehovah, and come down:

Touch the mountains, and they shall smoke.

6Cast forth lightning, and scatter them;

Send out thine arrows, and discomfit them.

7Stretch forth thy hand from above;

Rescue me, and deliver me out of great waters,

Out of the hand of aliens;

Psalm 18:13–15 (ASV)

13Jehovah also thundered in the heavens,

And the Most High uttered his voice,

Hailstones and coals of fire.

14And he sent out his arrows, and scattered them;

Yea, lightnings manifold, and discomfited them.

15Then the channels of waters appeared,

And the foundations of the world were laid bare,

At thy rebuke, O Jehovah,

At the blast of the breath of thy nostrils.

Psalm 18:34 (ASV)

34He teacheth my hands to war;

So that mine arms do bend a bow of brass.

Psalm 18:47–48 (ASV)

47Even the God that executeth vengeance for me,

And subdueth peoples under me.

48He rescueth me from mine enemies;

Yea, thou liftest me up above them that rise up against me;

Thou deliverest me from the violent man.

Psalm 144:10–15 (ASV)

10Thou art he that giveth salvation unto kings;

Who rescueth David his servant from the hurtful sword.

11Rescue me, and deliver me out of the hand of aliens,

Whose mouth speaketh deceit,

And whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood.

12When our sons shall be as plants grown up in their youth,

And our daughters as corner-stones hewn after the fashion of a palace;

13When our garners are full, affording all manner of store,

And our sheep bring forth thousands and ten thousands in our fields;

14When our oxen are well laden;

When there is no breaking in, and no going forth,

And no outcry in our streets:

15Happy is the people that is in such a case;

Yea, happy is the people whose God is Jehovah.

I will set him in the safety he panteth for.

Yet the Lord thinketh upon me:

Thou art my help and my deliverer;

Psalm 113:7 (ASV)

7He raiseth up the poor out of the dust,

And lifteth up the needy from the dunghill;

Psalm 146:6–10 (ASV)

6Who made heaven and earth,

The sea, and all that in them is;

Who keepeth truth for ever;

7Who executeth justice for the oppressed;

Who giveth food to the hungry.

Jehovah looseth the prisoners;

8Jehovah openeth the eyes of the blind;

Jehovah raiseth up them that are bowed down;

Jehovah loveth the righteous;

9Jehovah preserveth the sojourners;

He upholdeth the fatherless and widow;

But the way of the wicked he turneth upside down.

10Jehovah will reign for ever,

Thy God, O Zion, unto all generations.

Praise ye Jehovah.

Psalm 41:1–3 (ASV)

1Blessed is he that considereth the poor:

Jehovah will deliver him in the day of evil.

2Jehovah will preserve him, and keep him alive,

And he shall be blessed upon the earth;

And deliver not thou him unto the will of his enemies.

3Jehovah will support him upon the couch of languishing:

Thou makest all his bed in his sickness.

Exodus 22:21–27 (ASV)

21And a sojourner shalt thou not wrong, neither shalt thou oppress him: for ye were sojourners in the land of Egypt. 22Ye shall not afflict any widow, or fatherless child. 23If thou afflict them at all, and they cry at all unto me, I will surely hear their cry; 24and my wrath shall wax hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.

25If thou lend money to any of my people with thee that is poor, thou shalt not be to him as a creditor; neither shall ye lay upon him interest. 26If thou at all take thy neighbor’s garment to pledge, thou shalt restore it unto him before the sun goeth down: 27for that is his only covering, it is his garment for his skin: wherein shall he sleep? and it shall come to pass, when he crieth unto me, that I will hear; for I am gracious.

Isaiah 3:13–15 (ASV)

13Jehovah standeth up to contend, and standeth to judge the peoples. 14Jehovah will enter into judgment with the elders of his people, and the princes thereof: It is ye that have eaten up the vineyard; the spoil of the poor is in your houses: 15what mean ye that ye crush my people, and grind the face of the poor? saith the Lord, Jehovah of hosts.

Psalm 41:1–3 (ASV)

1Blessed is he that considereth the poor:

Jehovah will deliver him in the day of evil.

4and he shall wipe away every tear from their eyes; and death shall be no more; neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain, any more: the first things are passed away.

Matthew 25:31–46 (ASV)

31But when the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the angels with him, then shall he sit on the throne of his glory: 32and before him shall be gathered all the nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as the shepherd separateth the sheep from the goats; 33and he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. 34Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: 35for I was hungry, and ye gave me to eat; I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink; I was a stranger, and ye took me in; 36naked, and ye clothed me; I was sick, and ye visited me; I was in prison, and ye came unto me. 37Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee hungry, and fed thee? or athirst, and gave thee drink? 38And when saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? 39And when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? 40And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it unto one of these my brethren, even these least, ye did it unto me. 41Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into the eternal fire which is prepared for the devil and his angels: 42for I was hungry, and ye did not give me to eat; I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink; 43I was a stranger, and ye took me not in; naked, and ye clothed me not; sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. 44Then shall they also answer, saying, Lord, when saw we thee hungry, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? 45Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not unto one of these least, ye did it not unto me. 46And these shall go away into eternal punishment: but the righteous into eternal life.

Pour Out Your Indignation

Psalm 58:6–8 (ASV)

6Break their teeth, O God, in their mouth:

Break out the great teeth of the young lions, O Jehovah.

7Let them melt away as water that runneth apace:

When he aimeth his arrows, let them be as though they were cut off.

8Let them be as a snail which melteth and passeth away,

Like the untimely birth of a woman, that hath not seen the sun.

Psalm 69:22–28 (ASV)

22Let their table before them become a snare;

And when they are in peace, let it become a trap.

23Let their eyes be darkened, so that they cannot see;

And make their loins continually to shake.

24Pour out thine indignation upon them,

And let the fierceness of thine anger overtake them.

25Let their habitation be desolate;

Let none dwell in their tents.

26For they persecute him whom thou hast smitten;

And they tell of the sorrow of those whom thou hast wounded.

27Add iniquity unto their iniquity;

And let them not come into thy righteousness.

28Let them be blotted out of the book of life,

And not be written with the righteous.

Psalm 83:9–17 (ASV)

9Do thou unto them as unto Midian,

As to Sisera, as to Jabin, at the river Kishon;

10Who perished at Endor,

Who became as dung for the earth.

11Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb;

Yea, all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna;

12Who said, Let us take to ourselves in possession

The habitations of God.

13O my God, make them like the whirling dust;

As stubble before the wind.

14As the fire that burneth the forest,

And as the flame that setteth the mountains on fire,

15So pursue them with thy tempest,

And terrify them with thy storm.

16Fill their faces with confusion,

That they may seek thy name, O Jehovah.

17Let them be put to shame and dismayed for ever;

Yea, let them be confounded and perish;

Psalm 94:1–2 (ASV)

1O Jehovah, thou God to whom vengeance belongeth,

Thou God to whom vengeance belongeth, shine forth.

2Lift up thyself, thou judge of the earth:

Render to the proud their desert.

Psalm 137:7–9 (ASV)

7Remember, O Jehovah, against the children of Edom

The day of Jerusalem;

Who said, Rase it, rase it,

Even to the foundation thereof.

8O daughter of Babylon, that art to be destroyed,

Happy shall he be, that rewardeth thee

As thou hast served us.

9Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones

Against the rock.

Matthew 5:44 (ASV)

44but I say unto you, Love your enemies, and pray for them that persecute you;

Deuteronomy 27:9–16 (ASV)

9And Moses and the priests the Levites spake unto all Israel, saying, Keep silence, and hearken, O Israel: This day thou art become the people of Jehovah thy God. 10Thou shalt therefore obey the voice of Jehovah thy God, and do his commandments and his statutes, which I command thee this day.

11And Moses charged the people the same day, saying, 12These shall stand upon mount Gerizim to bless the people, when ye are passed over the Jordan: Simeon, and Levi, and Judah, and Issachar, and Joseph, and Benjamin. 13And these shall stand upon mount Ebal for the curse: Reuben, Gad, and Asher, and Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali. 14And the Levites shall answer, and say unto all the men of Israel with a loud voice,

15Cursed be the man that maketh a graven or molten image, an abomination unto Jehovah, the work of the hands of the craftsman, and setteth it up in secret. And all the people shall answer and say, Amen.

16Cursed be he that setteth light by his father or his mother. And all the people shall say, Amen.

Psalm 137:1–9 (ASV)

1By the rivers of Babylon,

There we sat down, yea, we wept,

When we remembered Zion.

2Upon the willows in the midst thereof

We hanged up our harps.

3For there they that led us captive required of us songs,

And they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying,

Sing us one of the songs of Zion.

4How shall we sing Jehovah’s song

In a foreign land?

5If I forget thee, O Jerusalem,

Let my right hand forget her skill.

6Let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth,

If I remember thee not;

If I prefer not Jerusalem

Above my chief joy.

7Remember, O Jehovah, against the children of Edom

The day of Jerusalem;

Who said, Rase it, rase it,

Even to the foundation thereof.

8O daughter of Babylon, that art to be destroyed,

Happy shall he be, that rewardeth thee

As thou hast served us.

9Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones

Against the rock.

Psalm 83:18 (ASV)

18That they may know that thou alone, whose name is Jehovah,

Art the Most High over all the earth.

Jeremiah 29:7 (ASV)

7And seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray unto Jehovah for it; for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace.

Psalm 116:15 (ASV)

15Precious in the sight of Jehovah

Is the death of his saints.

The Lord’s Judgment and the Sanctuary

2Jehovah is great in Zion;

And he is high above all the peoples.

3Let them praise thy great and terrible name:

Holy is he.

4The king’s strength also loveth justice;

Thou dost establish equity;

Thou executest justice and righteousness in Jacob.

Psalm 132:7–9 (ASV)

7We will go into his tabernacles;

We will worship at his footstool.

8Arise, O Jehovah, into thy resting-place;

Thou, and the ark of thy strength.

9Let thy priests be clothed with righteousness;

And let thy saints shout for joy.

Psalm 132:13–18 (ASV)

13For Jehovah hath chosen Zion;

He hath desired it for his habitation.

14This is my resting-place for ever:

Here will I dwell; for I have desired it.

15I will abundantly bless her provision:

I will satisfy her poor with bread.

16Her priests also will I clothe with salvation;

And her saints shall shout aloud for joy.

17There will I make the horn of David to bud:

I have ordained a lamp for mine anointed.

18His enemies will I clothe with shame;

But upon himself shall his crown flourish.

Psalm 73:17–20 (ASV)

17Until I went into the sanctuary of God,

And considered their latter end.

18Surely thou settest them in slippery places:

Thou castest them down to destruction.

19How are they become a desolation in a moment!

They are utterly consumed with terrors.

20As a dream when one awaketh,

So, O Lord, when thou awakest, thou wilt despise their image.

Numbers 27:21 (ASV)

21And he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall inquire for him by the judgment of the Urim before Jehovah: at his word shall they go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he, and all the children of Israel with him, even all the congregation.

Exodus 28:15 (ASV)

15And thou shalt make a breastplate of judgment, the work of the skilful workman; like the work of the ephod thou shalt make it; of gold, of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen, shalt thou make it.

Exodus 28:28–30 (ASV)

28And they shall bind the breastplate by the rings thereof unto the rings of the ephod with a lace of blue, that it may be upon the skilfully woven band of the ephod, and that the breastplate be not loosed from the ephod. 29And Aaron shall bear the names of the children of Israel in the breastplate of judgment upon his heart, when he goeth in unto the holy place, for a memorial before Jehovah continually. 30And thou shalt put in the breastplate of judgment the Urim and the Thummim; and they shall be upon Aaron’s heart, when he goeth in before Jehovah: and Aaron shall bear the judgment of the children of Israel upon his heart before Jehovah continually.

Deuteronomy 33:19 (ASV)

19They shall call the peoples unto the mountain;

There shall they offer sacrifices of righteousness:

For they shall suck the abundance of the seas,

And the hidden treasures of the sand.

Psalm 4:5 (ASV)

5Offer the sacrifices of righteousness,

And put your trust in Jehovah.

Psalm 99:8 (ASV)

8Thou answeredst them, O Jehovah our God:

Thou wast a God that forgavest them,

Though thou tookest vengeance of their doings.

Psalm 132:13–18 (ASV)

13For Jehovah hath chosen Zion;

He hath desired it for his habitation.

14This is my resting-place for ever:

Here will I dwell; for I have desired it.

15I will abundantly bless her provision:

I will satisfy her poor with bread.

16Her priests also will I clothe with salvation;

And her saints shall shout aloud for joy.

17There will I make the horn of David to bud:

I have ordained a lamp for mine anointed.

18His enemies will I clothe with shame;

But upon himself shall his crown flourish.

15And the seventh angel sounded; and there followed great voices in heaven, and they said,

The kingdom of the world is become the kingdom of our Lord, and of his Christ: and he shall reign for ever and ever. 16And the four and twenty elders, who sit before God on their thrones, fell upon their faces and worshipped God, 17saying,

We give thee thanks, O Lord God, the Almighty, who art and who wast; because thou hast taken thy great power, and didst reign.

18And the nations were wroth, and thy wrath came, and the time of the dead to be judged, and the time to give their reward to thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and to them that fear thy name, the small and the great; and to destroy them that destroy the earth.

19And there was opened the temple of God that is in heaven; and there was seen in his temple the ark of his covenant; and there followed lightnings, and voices, and thunders, and an earthquake, and great hail.

Romans 8:34 (ASV)

Psalm 58:10–11 (ASV)

10The righteous shall rejoice when he seeth the vengeance:

He shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked;

11So that men shall say, Verily there is a reward for the righteous:

Verily there is a God that judgeth in the earth.

James 5:10 (ASV)

Hebrews 11:35–36 (ASV)
