Sunday: The Foolish Galatians

Sabbath School Net Posted on July 22, 2017 by Sabbath School LessonJuly 28, 2017avatar
Apostasy?

Read Galatians 3:1-5. Summarize below what Paul is saying to them. In what sense could we be in danger of falling into the same spiritual pitfall, of starting out right and then falling into legalism?   Several modern translations have tried to capture the sense of Paul’s words in verse 1 about the “foolish” Galatians. The … Continue reading –>

Memory Text: “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us — for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree’ ” (Galatians 3:13, ESV). Friday: Further Thought – Righteousness by Faith Alone

Further Thought: “The danger has been presented to me again and again of entertaining, as a people, false ideas of justification by faith. I have been shown for years that Satan would work in a special manner to confuse the mind on this point. The law of God has been largely dwelt upon and has … Continue reading –>

Thursday: Does Faith Promote Sin?

Sabbath School Net Posted on July 19, 2017 by Sabbath School LessonJuly 25, 2017avatar
Joy in the Lord

One of the main accusations against Paul was that his gospel of justification by faith alone encouraged people to sin see (Rom. 3:8, Rom. 6:1). No doubt the accusers reasoned that if people do not have to keep the law to be accepted by God, why should they be concerned with how they live? Luther, too, faced … Continue reading –>

Wednesday: The Obedience of Faith

Sabbath School Net Posted on July 18, 2017 by Sabbath School LessonJuly 22, 2017avatar
Obedience of Faith

Paul makes it clear that faith absolutely is foundational to the Christian life. It is the means by which we lay hold of the promises we have in Christ. But what is faith exactly? What does it involve? What do the following texts teach us about the origin of faith? Gen. 15:5; John 3:14-16; 2 Cor. 5:14-15; Gal. 5:6. Genuine … Continue reading –>

“And be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith” (Phil. 3:9, NKJV). We should not assume Jewish Christians were suggesting that faith in Christ was not important; after all, they were all believers in … Continue reading –>

Monday: Works of the Law

Obeying food laws

Paul says three times in Galatians 2:16 that a person is not justified by “works of the law.” What does he mean by the expression “works of the law”? How do these texts (Gal. 2:16-17; Gal. 3:2, Gal. 3:5; Gal. 3:10; Rom. 3:20; Rom. 3:28) help us to understand his meaning? Before we can understand the phrase “the works of the law,” we first need … Continue reading –>

Sunday: The Question of “Justification”

Sabbath School Net Posted on July 15, 2017 by Sabbath School LessonJuly 20, 2017avatar
Justification

In Galatians 2:15, Paul writes, “We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners” (ESV). What point do you think he was making? Paul’s words need to be understood in their context. In an attempt to win over his fellow Jewish Christians to his position, Paul starts with something they would agree with — the traditional distinction … Continue reading –>

At a camp meeting 40 years later, I happened to see Dr. I. demonstrating some kind of health product, if I remember correctly. (In my mind, I see only the image of him, much older, but still looking much like he did when I was a student, with a friend by my side.) I lingered a little but did not introduce myself. I briefly wondered whether he recognized me. I’m fairly sure that I was as recognizable to him as he was to me.

Had he changed? Or did he still feel superior in his “humility”? Should I talk to him? I didn’t know how to approach him, and was busy with friends. I still don’t know whether I should have said something. (Maybe I’m just a coward.)

If God wants him to see my story, his and my identity are clear enough in this post, that God can direct him to it.
