The Work of the Holy Spirit – Lesson Plan
Key Thought: The Spirit testifies of Jesus’ righteousness, goodness, grace, and power. He draws us to Him who has the gift of eternal life.
1. Have a volunteer read John 16:8-11.

a. Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
b. What does the Holy Spirit do for us and why is it so important?
c. Personal Application : Have you ever been convicted of sin by the Holy Spirit? Is it always a small voice, or does He sometimes use other people? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study : One of your relatives states: “Is conviction the same as guilt? Is there a difference between sin and sins? How do we cope with both conviction and guilt for sin and sins?” How would you respond to your relative?
2. Have a volunteer read Hebrews 4:15,16.
a. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point is in this passage.
b. How is our righteousness related to the investigative judgment going on in heaven right now?
c. Personal Application : What is your understanding of the difference between self-justification and Christ’s righteousness? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study : One of your friends states, “Nobody can keep the law. The law was done away with by Christ on the cross because it was a bad law that nobody could obey. We are justified by faith and are no longer under an archaic, useless law.” How would you respond to your friend?
3. Have a volunteer read Romans 5:3-5.
a. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
b. How is hope different from optimism? In what is the hope the Holy Spirit gives us grounded in?
c. Personal Application: If someone were to ask you about the reason that you have hope, what answer would you give and why? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study : One of your neighbors states, “I don’t see much reason to have any hope in this life anymore. We are financially going down the tubes, our morality is at an all-time low, crime and hatred are rampant. The weather is acting up everywhere.” How would you respond to your neighbor?
4. Have a volunteer read Ephesians 1:13,14.
a. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
b. What does it mean to be sealed by the Holy Spirit?
c. Personal Application : Do you have the assurance of eternal life? What is the basis for that assurance? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study : Think of one person who needs to hear a message from this week’s lesson. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.

The opening text:
8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
It was an excellent lesson -- however, I was hoping there would be a lesson on the "latter rain" or final great outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
The above text isn't just talking about the work of the Holy Spirit on individual church members, it's talking about the WORLD.
He will convict the world!
The whole world will be brought to the realization of the elements of the final battle for the souls of people.
Rev. 18:1-2 And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.
And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen....
The whole world will be brought to decision.
We have the most solemn message of truth ever borne to the world.
