The Person of Peter – Teaching Plan
Key Thought: Peter was transformed when he realized his true condition as a sinner in the presence of God. He learned that he needed to trust in Christ alone to gain victory.
1. Have a volunteer read Luke 5:4-11.
a. Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
b. What does this story indicate about Peter’s spiritual condition?
c. Personal Application : What kind of commitment does God ask each of those who choose to follow Him? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study : One of your relatives states: “There are very few people who would be willing to give up their jobs, their homes, or their possessions to follow Christ. People today can’t even give up much of their time for Christ’s calling.” Do you tend to agree or disagree with your relative?
2. Have a volunteer read Galatians 2:11-14.
a. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point is in this passage.
b. What does this tell us about Peter, even as he was a prominent leader in the church?
c. Personal Application : Peter had some blind spots. How do we respond when someone else seeks to point out our blind spots? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study : One of your friends states, “How do you deal with those leaders or members who seem to be compromising with the world on Biblical or social issues?” How would you respond to your friend?
3. Have a volunteer read Luke 22:31-34.
a. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
b. What can we learn from Peter’s failures?
c. Personal Application: How can we learn to forgive those who have greatly disappointed or offended us? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study: One of your neighbors states, “I believe the church needs work in restoring people to full faith and confidence after they have fallen. We tend to focus on the past and what they did rather than focusing on restoration and focusing on what they can become.” How would you respond to your neighbor?
