The Third Missionary Journey – Teaching Plan
Key Thought: Paul steadfastly performed his mission on his third journey despite the obstacles and foreboding of future affliction.
1. Have a volunteer read Acts 19:1-7.
- Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
- What did Paul encounter when he arrived in Ephesus?
- Personal Application: How do you know you have received the Holy Spirit? Does it come automatically after baptism? Does it always manifest itself in outward signs? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: One of your relatives states: “Why do you think it is right to use this passage to require rebaptism of Christians, already baptized by immersion from other denominations, who join our faith?” How would you respond to your relative?
2. Have a volunteer read Acts 19:26-32.
- Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point is in this passage.
- What was the opposition to Paul that arose in Ephesus?
- Personal Application: How would you comfort someone who might face loss of income or job if they were converted? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: One of your friends states, “Was this opposition due to their fear of a loss of money in selling statues? Are there Christian churches that would oppose the truth because of their business of selling religious artifacts?” How would you reply to your friend?
3. Have a volunteer read Acts 20:22-27
- Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
- How determined are you to be faithful to God in all things? What “little” things do you have in your life that may cause compromise with the truth?
- Personal Application: How can we face imprisonment and death with the same resolution and faith that Paul exhibited here? Share your thoughts
- Case Study: One of your neighbors states, “Do you think the ministers and members of your church are preaching the whole counsel of God, or are they watering down, or ignoring portions of the three angel’s messages?” How would you respond to your neighbor?
4. Have a volunteer read Acts 21:10-14.
- Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
- Would you take Agabus’ prophecy as from God or a false prophecy?
- Personal Application: If someone told you that you would be imprisoned or killed if you went to a certain place to preach, would you go or stay away? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: Think of one person who needs to hear a message from this week’s lesson. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.
