1. Have a volunteer read Matthew 4:1-11..
- Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
- How did Jesus defend Himself against Satan’s temptations in the wilderness? What do we learn from this?
- Personal Application: How can we learn to rely on and trust the Word of God in all situations? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: One of your relatives states: “How do you know, if someone quotes Scripture to you, that it is not correct and your Scripture is? How do we know we are quoting and using Scripture correctly and not misusing it? How would you respond to your relative?
2. Have a volunteer read Matthew 5:17-20.
- Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point is in this passage.
- How do we respond to temptation today? Do we know the Scripture well enough to call upon them in response to adversity?
- Personal Application: What competitive sources of authority (family, preacher, philosophy, or culture) might be against your submission to the Word of God? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: One of your friends states, “Why is it that many who teach the Bible as literature and seem to know it well, do not believe what it teaches?” How would you respond to your friend?
3. Have a volunteer read Luke 24:44,45.
- Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
- How does Jesus use the Scriptures to teach the disciples the gospel message?
- Personal Application: How can we learn to accept the authority of the Scripture even when we realize not everything still applies to us today? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: One of your neighbors states, “”The Bible is a good source for history and the mindset of the early Christians, but it really doesn’t have much application to us today living in this day and age of modern thinking?” How would you respond to your neighbor?
4. Have a volunteer read Matthew 4:4..
- Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
- When someone asks you for your opinion on something, do you give your opinions or use Biblical teaching and principles?
- Personal Application: Have you heard opinions or thoughts that cast doubt on the authority and accuracy of the Scriptures?. Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: Think of one person who needs to hear a message from this week’s lesson. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.
