03: A Matter of Life and Death – Lesson Plan
Key Thought : God teaches us His principles of living for our own good. Understanding the guidance from God’s law is essential for our ultimate survival.
[Lesson Plan for A Matter of Life and Death January 12, 2015]
1. Have a volunteer read Proverbs 6:20-23.
a. Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
b. What does it mean to bind the commandments on our hearts and tie them to our necks?
c. Personal Application: Did you always follow your parents rules? Why or why not? As our Christian experience gets older, do we tend to be more obedient, or start to “reason” our disobedience to God’s rules? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study: One of your relatives states: “Why would anyone follow the law if they didn’t have to, or if it was not to their advantage not to?” How would you respond to your relative?
2. Have a volunteer read Proverbs 6:24-32.
a. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point is in this passage.
b. Does this say starving justifies stealing to eat? Why do many people think it’s okay to steal to satisfy basic needs?
c. Personal Application: How do we relate God’s law to cause and effect in our lives? Why is adultery so destructive to the soul? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study: One of your friends states, “I know I shouldn’t have left my wife to move in with this woman, but God has shown me that she is the one for me. He sent her to me.” How would you respond to your neighbor?
3. Have a volunteer read Proverbs 7:7-12.
a. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
b. What practical things can we do to reduce our temptations and become less vulnerable to sin?
c. Personal Application: What kind of temptations appeal to most people? Why are they attractive and dangerous? Share your thoughts..
d. Case Study: One of your neighbors states, “How can we help people who are discouraged, frustrated, and suffering because of their failures?” How would you respond to your friend?
4. Have a volunteer read Proverbs 7:24-27.
a. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
b. What makes the adulterer vulnerable to the threat of death?
c. Personal Application: Think of some “strong” people who have fallen mightily. Why should this make you take heed? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study: Think of one person who needs to hear a message from this week’s lesson. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.
