12: Dealing With Difficult Passages – Teaching Plan
Key Thought: Peter writes that some things Paul wrote were hard to understand. These words are twisted or distorted by ignorant or unstable people to their own destruction.

1. Have a volunteer read James 4:6-10.
- Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
- Why is humility important when trying to tackle difficult passages and Scripture?
- Personal Application: How do we strike a balance between certainty about a Scripture or Bible teaching and humility? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: One of your relatives states: “How can you Adventists be so certain about the Sabbath and eating certain foods, and everybody else be wrong?” How would you respond to your relative?
2. Have a volunteer read Galatians 6:9,10.
- Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point is in this passage.
- Why are persistence, determination, and patience important in solving Biblical problems?
- Personal Application: Have you ever questioned some Scripture or another? How did you find the answer, or did you? Do you still have questions? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: One of your friends states, “What does it mean we will reap if we persevere in well-doing? What kind of reaping is this speaking of?” How would you respond to your friend?
3. Have a volunteer read Acts 17:11.
- Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
- What did the Apostles and members of the early church do when confronted with difficult questions?
- Personal Application: How does prayer help us in studying the Bible and its application in our lives? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: One of your neighbors states, “Are there misunderstandings about Bible texts that can lead to long term negative influences on others in their understanding of God and His truth?” How would you respond to your neighbor using the year-day principle.?
4. Have a volunteer read 2 Timothy 2:14-15.
- Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
- What message is Paul giving all of us about teaching from the Bible ?
- Personal Application: How can we encourage others who are searching for truth? Why is it not a good idea to always tell others what a passage means? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: Think of one person who needs to hear a message from this week’s lesson. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.
