  1. Excellent scriptural and quoted inspirational passages to memorize and apply to our lives.

    Thanks.

  2. The 10 Commandments are the “ultimate” law of God. Unlike the other laws (ceremonial, judicial, cultural, civic, sacrificial) given by God, the 10 Commandments are most expressed sovereignty of God. This law was audibly spoken by God Himself ((Exod. 20:1, Deut. 5:22) and written by His own finger on stone (Exod. 31:18). Secondly, they were written on tablet of stone symbolising permanence, unlike written on scrolls. Thirdly, they were placed in the Ark of the Covenant (Exod. 25:16) signifying how important and authoritative they are. It is also essential to note the universality, timelessness and ethical this law is. It is only a Holy and Supreme God who can rightly define what is moral. In essence, the 10 commandments are not only an absolute expression of God’s will but also an expression of His sovereign kingship over all creation.

    • They (the ten commandments) are the ultimate law of God for humans, however, I don't think they necessarily are the ultimate law for the universe. As Inge mentioned above, some of the 10 commandments have no relevance to other beings. Love is the ultimate commandment and the 10 commandments express what that looks like in our context. The principles apply to all contexts, but not necessarily the commands.

      • Thanks, Christina. I'm not even sure that the Ten Commandments are the "ultimate Law of God" for humans. Remember that Jesus gave a "New Commandment" before He returned to heaven?

It seems to me that His New Commandment is the "ultimate" Law of God. He said "A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another." John 13:34.

He could not give that commandment until He had demonstrated it in His own life. It is the same law of "self-renouncing love" that Ellen White mentioned:

“In the light from Calvary it will be seen that the law of self-renouncing love is the law of life for earth and heaven; that the love which “seeketh not her own” has its source in the heart of God; and that in the meek and lowly One is manifested the character of Him who dwelleth in the light which no man can approach unto.” (Ellen G. White, Desire of Ages, p. 20)

        • Very true - I think if we are living the life of love to the fullest extent - we won't even think about law. It will be our natural way of life.

However, if we follow the New Commandment, we will keep the 10 Commandmennts. They are not at odds.

      • Among the created law, God’s moral law is supreme. It is the very expression of God’s character of love. This law is the expression of Go’s love. You cannot separate love from the law. This is the very principle that gives the law life. Otherwise, the law becomes dead cold legality. This is the expression of God’s heart. This is the very embodiment of the eternal moral will of God. In scripture, there is no law above the moral law. This law abides on earth and in heaven. The angles abide by this law. “Praise the Lord, you angels, you mighty ones who carry out his plans, listening for each of his commands” (Psalm 103:20, NLT). Angels live in harmony with God’s law (law of love, expressed in the commandments). Lucifer fell as we know because of disobedience (Isaiah 14:12–14; Ezekiel 28:15, Revelation 12:7–9). Angels in heaven do the will of God. “Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:10). Fallen angels (demons) are lawbreakers who rebelled against God’s law of love.

God’s moral law is the constitution of the universe. It is eternal and universal abiding to humans, angels and all created beings in heaven and on earth. Praise be to God, on the cross Jesus upheld and vindicated the law.

“For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood. This sacrifice shows that God was being fair when he held back and did not punish those who sinned in times past, for he was looking ahead and including them in what he would do in this present time. God did this to demonstrate his righteousness, for he himself is fair and just, and he makes sinners right in his sight when they believe in Jesus” (Romans 3:25-26, NLT).

    • Omwenga, how do you see the Ten Commandments applying to the angels and other holy beings?

Since angels are not sexual beings, can they even commit adultery? How can angels honor their father and mother, if they have neither father nor mother? If there's no way for angels to "keep" the Ten Commandments, how can they be the "ultimate law of God"?

      • Yes, it is true that angels do not have parents, do not marry, do not have property, but the fundamental principles behind the 10 commandments apply to them (loyalty, love, faithfulness, respect, truth, purity). Angels cannot commit physical adultery but can commit spiritual adultery. Fallen angels committed spiritual adultery. They betrayed God. Adultery = unfaithfulness. When they joined in the rebellion in heaven, they committed spiritual adultery. In marriage, faithfulness is sexual purity (one husband and one wife). For angels who do not marry, they are expected to have spiritual allegiance to God alone. Spiritual adultery is a well pronounced concept in scripture. What is critically important, as Jesus said, it is the spirit of the law and not the letter of the law. Angels are not married, but can they be unfaithful to God?

The law to honour father and matter apply to angels as well. The Bible is explicitly that Jesus honoured His Father in heaven. Angelic beings are expected to abide by this law. They are expected to honour God the Father in heaven. If not so, that will be a rebellion and that will be sin. The underlying principle here is not simply to honour biological fathers and mothers only, but to give respect, obedience and gratitude where it is morally due. Holy angels are doing all these with the highest duty of happiness.

I am not any slightest of understanding how any of God’s created being can operate outside God’s law of love!

        • I think in playing around with the meaning of the commandments, you are actually proving that the letter of the law does not apply to angels.
The seventh commandment is not about spiritual adultery. It is about literal adultery. Spiritual adultery is already clearly covered in the first commandment of having no other gods before God. The fifth commandment is talking about literal parents. If it was about God, it would just be repeating what the first commandment says.
Also, the Sabbath, as a memorial of creation, is applicable specifically to earth. Did the Sabbath exist before creation? Maybe it did in some form in Heaven, but the exact command is specific to our planet.

It is the principles that are universal and timeless and as Inge says they can be summarized in one word - love.

When Lucifer started causing all his trouble and running down God's law, Ellen White actually stated that the angels did not even know there was a law.
She also stated in chapter 32 of Patriarchs and Prophets “If man had kept the law of God, as given to Adam after his fall, preserved by Noah, and observed by Abraham, there would have been no necessity for the ordinance of circumcision. And if the descendants of Abraham had kept the covenant, of which circumcision was a sign, they would never have been seduced into idolatry, nor would it have been necessary for them to suffer a life of bondage in Egypt; they would have kept God’s law in mind, and there would have been no necessity for it to be proclaimed from Sinai or engraved upon the tables of stone. And had the people practiced the principles of the Ten Commandments, there would have been no need of the additional directions given to Moses." This quote really emphasizes that the 10 Commandments are ultimately application of the principle of love.

None of this goes against the 10 commandments - I can't think of any situation in a world where God is worshipped where the 10 commandments would be broken - but it helps understand just what God's Kingdom is based on.

  3. The 10 commandments are an adaptation of God's universal law of love to sinful men. The angels loved God and each other. The angels in heaven obeyed the law of love. They did not have fathers and mothers who were required to be honoured. There was no marriage, so there was no question of adultery.
I believe there was no list of rules for them to obey. They naturally did the right thing.
The fact that most the commandments are written in the negative suggests that they are directed to beings who are prone to do what is prohibited: sinners

    • Thank you, Cephas, for your contribution!

Yes, I believe the angels "naturally did the right thing" because the law of self-renouncing love, the law of life for the universe, was written in their hearts.

It was also originally written in the hearts of Adam and Eve - until they chose to listen to Satan's insinuation of doubt about the Creator's love for them. After choosing to listen to Satan instead of God (thereby choosing another god), they no longer "naturally did the right thing." They needed a Redeemer to give them new hearts - just like we do today.

  4. The ten commandment are truly God's commandments, and i am here by encouraging my fellow believers to keep them because they are the moral law of God, the creator of the universe.
