05: Christ as the Lord of the Sabbath Lesson Plan
Key Thought : In order to keep the Sabbath holy, men must themselves be holy. Through faith they must become partakers of the righteousness of Christ.
[Lesson Plan for Christ as the Lord of the Sabbath April 27, 2015]
1. Have a volunteer read Luke 4:16-20.
a. Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
b. Why is it important to realize that Jesus custom was to attend synagogue on the Sabbath?
c. Personal Application: What liberating things have you experienced by observing the Sabbath? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study: One of your relatives states: “What is Jesus saying here about Himself and the acceptable year of the Lord? Is He referring to a prophecy concerning time?” How would you respond to your relative?
2. Have a volunteer read Luke 4:31-37.
a. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point is in this passage.
b. How did Jesus’ healing show the true purpose of His coming and the Sabbath?
c. Personal Application: How have you seen the conflict between Christ and Satan played out in your life? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study: One of your friends states, “This nonsense about demon possession and wicked spirits and a devil is a fairy tale. The bad things that people do or happen to them are due to choices and how they are raised. The supernatural has nothing to do with it.” How would you respond to your neighbor?
3. Have a volunteer read Luke 6:1-5.
a. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
b. How should we observe the Sabbath in doing works of mercy?
c. Personal Application: Can we do on the Sabbath whatever is right in our own eyes to prevent us from being too rigid or legalistic? Share your thoughts..
d. Case Study: One of your neighbors states, “When Jesus said He was Lord of the Sabbath, was He giving a reason why He and His disciples were breaking it by threshing corn?” How would you respond to your friend?
4. Have a volunteer read Luke 14:1-6.
a. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
b. Why is Satan so intent on destroying the Sabbath experience both in and out of the church?
c. Personal Application: How could we be guilty of perverting the observance of the Sabbath? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study: Think of one person who needs to hear a message from this week’s lesson. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.
