[Lesson plan for The Coming of Jesus March 30, 2015]
1. Have a volunteer read Luke 1:1-4.
a. Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
b. How could Luke, a Gentile convert, have had a perfect understanding of all things from the beginning?
c. Personal Application: Are there converts to Adventism that seem to have a clearer and more perfect understanding of our doctrines than many who were raised in the church? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study: One of your relatives states: “If Luke used previously published materials and eyewitness accounts of others, how can we understand how inspiration works in believing His gospel?” How would you respond to your relative?
2. Have a volunteer read Luke 1:18-20.
a. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point is in this passage.
b. What does it mean to be blameless in God’s eyes considering Zacharias doubted the angel’s words?
c. Personal Application: Who would you consider blameless in your estimation? Why do you consider them such? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study: One of your friends states, “I thought that all the miracles and events in the Bible had scientific explanations. If I were Zacharias, I would doubt the angel’s words as well. But concerning his inability to speak, here must be a psychological or scientific reason for that dumbness.” How would you respond to your neighbor?
3. Have a volunteer read Luke 1:37.
a. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
b. How does this statement relate to believing in the virgin birth?
c. Personal Application: Does our ability to produce test tube babies and cloning bring us closer to understanding and believing Christ’s incarnation? Share your thoughts..
d. Case Study: One of your neighbors states, “Why is believing that Jesus was born of a virgin so important to the gospel? Doesn’t virgin also mean a young woman?” How would you respond to your friend?
4. Have a volunteer read Luke 2:27-32.
a. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
b. Why does Simeon declare Christ’s salvation to be unto all people and a light to the Gentiles, when the Messiah was to come to the Jews?
c. Personal Application: What has following Christ cost you, and why is that cost cheap enough? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study: Think of one person who needs to hear a message from this week’s lesson. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.
