Global Rebellion the Patriarchs January 9-15, 2016
1. Have a volunteer read Genesis 6:11-13.
a. Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
b. What was the reason for the flood? What does this tell us about the innate nature of the human heart?
c. Personal Application : How do we prepare for the end of the world by fire? How can we find grace in the eyes of the Lord? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study : One of your relatives states: “How did Noah stay faithful and chosen to escape the flood in which God said was a continually evil world?.” How would you respond to your relative?
2. Have a volunteer read Genesis 22:1-3.
a. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point is in this passage.
b. What reasons or motives did God have to test Abraham’s faith?
c. Personal Application : Have you ever felt like your faith has been tested in some way? Does it need to be tested at times? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study : One of your friends states, “Why in the world would God test Abraham like that? God doesn’t tempt us with evil. Killing a son is what the pagans did to appease their gods. So what was God doing? How could Abraham know it was really God asking him to do this?” How would you respond to your neighbor?
3. Have a volunteer read Genesis 28:12-15.
a. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
b. What great hope is revealed in Jacob’s dream?
c. Personal Application: Pain and suffering was brought to them, both innocent and guilty, because of their choices; how can we learn to think about consequences before we act? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study : One of your neighbors states, “What is this ladder that angels of God ascend and descend upon? What does this dream mean anyway?” How would you respond to your neighbor?
4. Have a volunteer read Genesis 45:4-11.
a. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
b. When rivalries and jealousies arise in families today, how is it possible to see a positive tomorrow? How can we help people see God’s bigger purpose for them?
c. Personal Application: How do you keep your faith intact and have a gracious attitude when things don’t seem to be turning out very well? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study : Think of one person who needs to hear a message from this week’s lesson. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.
