[Lesson plan for The Humility of the Wise March 16, 2015]
1. Have a volunteer read Proverbs 30:1-3,32-33.
a. Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
b. What does it mean that the forcing of wrath brings strife?
c. Personal Application: How do we “put our hands to our mouths” in being humble and not be prideful to others? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study: One of your relatives states: “I know of many Christians that think they are better than anyone else and act like it. They are derogatory, opinionated, and argumentative.” How would you respond to your relative?
2. Have a volunteer read Proverbs 30:3-6.
a. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point is in this passage.
b. If every word of God is pure, why are there so many critics and interpreters of God’s word to cause debate and confusion, even among our brethren?
c. Personal Application: What are some of the different ways that our very existence depends on God? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study: One of your friends states, “There are a lot of books that try to explain Scripture, and many pastors who explain God’s word by adding their own thoughts and words. Is this a wrong approach according to Proverbs?” How would you respond to your neighbor?
3. Have a volunteer read Proverbs 30:7-9.
a. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
b. How do we find balance in all that we do, so that we do not tempt ourselves and forget God?
c. Personal Application: Since sin has distorted nature, how can we rightly interpret what we see there now? Share your thoughts..
d. Case Study: One of your neighbors states, “What has caused humans to become so estranged from animals and nature? Why are children growing up inside the home instead of outside in nature, seeing God’s handiwork? Is modern society and its technology an evil against God?” How would you respond to your friend?
4. Have a volunteer read Proverbs 30:18,19.
a. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
b. How can the study of nature teach us about the character of the Creator?
c. Personal Application: How can we keep believing in the goodness of God and not be deterred or disheartened or discouraged by the corruption in the world? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study: Think of one person who needs to hear a message from this week’s lesson. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.
