Jesus Bade Them – “Follow Me” – Discussion Starters
- They know His voice I. [Lesson 11 for September 10] You’ve probably seen it dozens of times–a dog turns into a bundle of wiggles running to its owner the moment it recognizes him or her. Do we Christians have the same instinct that draws us to our Owner and Protector, God? Why was the early Christian church able to astonish the Roman leaders by their display of faithfulness to the teachings of Jesus even after His death?
- They know His voice II. Why is it sometimes difficult for us as Christians to recognize the voice of Jesus speaking to us? Why do the words and voice of Satan appeal to us – sometimes even more than the voice of Jesus? Do you take time each week to appreciate the love of Jesus in nature? Does a beautiful sunset or a perfect flower represent God’s love to you? What about the influence of those around us who are faithful to God? How can being drawn to Jesus help us lead others to love Him, too?
- We are to seek. How important should we set the priority of seeking those who could benefit from a walk with Jesus in our church? When we show friendliness and concern to neighbors and associates, can we also be seeking them for God’s kingdom? What was Christ’s method for seeking the lost? How concerned–and friendly – should we be towards those we see from day to day? Will the Holy Spirit guide us in our words and actions to develop heavenly friendships with those around us?
- The bridge. Zacchaeus, the short man, wanted to see Jesus so much, what did he do? Do you think people snickered or pointed fingers at him? What did Jesus do with this uncomfortable social situation? Do you spend a few minutes every week welcoming visitors to church and striking up a conversation with those who are shy but are coming to church anyway? How can you and I seek and find bridges to draw people to a loving relationship with Jesus?
- The bidding. What do you think of Mark Finley’s idea that not introducing God to people is spiritual malpractice? Are you ever guilty of such? Why not collect a dozen or so stories of experiences in your life that led you closer to Jesus and then pray for opportunities to share them? Can Jesus take away your fear of embarrassing yourself by sharing what God means to you? Why not ask Him?
- Seek and ye shall find. Has God ever given you an opportunity to “knock on the door” of another person’s heart to invite Jesus inside? Next time that happens, what can you think about to give you courage to do so? Have you ever prayed with someone outside your church fellowship to join you in reaching out to God? Is that kind of witnessing helpful? rewarding? God’s will for you?
