Lord of Jews and Gentiles, May 7-13, 2016
1. Have a volunteer read Matthew 14:17-21.
a. Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
b. Why were the disciples skeptical about Jesus’ ability to feed the multitudes?
c. Personal Application : In what ways might you expectations of what you expect from God be too narrow? Do we limit what God might do for us? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study : One of your relatives states: “If we never see a miracle, doesn’t that hurt our faith? We read about them in the Word, but most people have never seen a miracle. How are they supposed to increase their faith?” How would you respond to your relative?
2. Have a volunteer read Matthew 14:27-31.
a. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point is in this passage.
b. What caused Peter to be afraid and ask Jesus to save him?
c. Personal Application : How should knowing that you live in a world where forces greater than you have you at their mercy lead you to a greater dependence upon God? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study : One of your friends states, “Why did Peter ask Jesus, ‘If it be you, bid me to come to you on the water’?” How would you respond to your friend?
3. Have a volunteer read Matthew 15:2-9.
a. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
b. What is the specific issue here, and how does Jesus address it?
c. Personal Application: How can we as a church better show mercy and compassion for all people? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study : One of your neighbors states, “How can we tell what is Scripturally right to do, and what is nothing more than tradition?” How would you respond to your neighbor?
4. Have a volunteer read Matthew 15:24-28.
a. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
b. Why did Jesus seem to be so harsh to this woman?
c. Personal Application : What barriers do you see in your church that need to be penetrated in order to spread the ministry of the gospel? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study : Think of one person who needs to hear a message from this week’s lesson. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.
