Key Thought : Jesus came to restore that which Adam lost, to save sinners from their sins, and to reveal the true character of God.
Victory in the Wilderness -January 30 – February 5, 2016
1. Have a volunteer read Matthew 3:7-12.
a. Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
b. Why is John so negative towards the religious leaders of his day, calling them vipers?
c. Personal Application : What should our attitude and message be to the religious leaders who lead the people in the wrong paths and falsehood? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study : One of your relatives states: “Why is John being so dramatic about judgment and wrath when introducing the Messiah, Jesus Christ?” How would you respond to your relative?
2. Have a volunteer read Matthew 4:1-3.
a. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point is in this passage.
b. Why was it necessary for Jesus to fast and pray for forty days?
c. Personal Application : Do you think there is a place for fasting today in your life and in the church? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study : One of your friends states, “Why did Satan say, ”If you are the Son of God”? Didn’t he know? Didn’t Jesus know? What was the point?” How would you respond to your neighbor?
3. Have a volunteer read Matthew 4:5-7.
a. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
b. What is the difference between presumption and faith?
c. Personal Application: What would you tell someone who keeps falling into temptation? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study : One of your neighbors states, “If a person puts himself in a perilous situation and then asks God to help them out of it, do you think God will answer their prayer?” How would you respond to your neighbor?
4. Have a volunteer read Matthew 4:8-10.
a. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
b. How does knowing and using Scripture help us in resisting temptation?
c. Personal Application: What are some choices and subtile ways that we can be tempted? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study : Think of one person who needs to hear a message from this week’s lesson. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.
