Wednesday: Encouragement from Heaven

Sabbath School Net Posted on May 17, 2016 by Sabbath School LessonMay 19, 2016avatar
The Transfiguration

Read Matthew 17:1-9. What happened here, and why was it so important for both Jesus Himself and for the disciples? Jesus “had dwelt amid the love and fellowship of heaven; but in the world that He had created, He was in solitude. Now heaven had sent its messengers to Jesus; not angels, but men who … Continue reading –>

Tuesday: Peter as Satan

Sabbath School Net Posted on May 16, 2016 by Sabbath School LessonMay 20, 2016avatar
Christ Tempted

Read Matthew 16:21-23. Why is Jesus suddenly so tough on Peter? Peter’s problem wasn’t that he was trying to protect Jesus. He was trying to steer Jesus. He was no longer following Jesus; he was telling Jesus to follow him. Jesus said, “‘Get behind Me, Satan!’” (Matthew 16:23, NKJV) because, like Satan himself in the … Continue reading –>

Monday: “On this Rock”

Sabbath School Net Posted on May 15, 2016 by Sabbath School LessonMay 21, 2016avatar
Rock of Ages

Right after Peter’s bold confession of faith in Jesus as “‘the Christ, the Son of the living God,’” Jesus says something in answer to Peter. Read Matthew 16:17-20. What did Jesus say to Peter, and how are we to understand what He meant? The phrase “on this rock” has been controversial within the Christian church. … Continue reading –>

Looking Ahead: Peter and the Rock

Sabbath School Net Posted on May 14, 2016 by Sabbath School LessonApril 26, 2023avatar

I once visited Rome and stood in the very room next to the Sistine Chapel that was the Pope’s office during the Reformation. I saw an old chair next to the wall, so I sat down, closed my eyes and thought about the wooden desk standing across the room. I wondered about the conversations and … Continue reading –>

Sunday: “You are the Christ”

Sabbath School Net Posted on May 14, 2016 by Sabbath School LessonMay 21, 2016avatar
You are the Christ

Imagine what it must have been like for Peter, who had been with Jesus almost from the start. What must have gone through his mind as he witnessed one incredible event after another: the healings, the casting out of demons, the feeding of the multitudes, the amazing teachings, the controlling of nature, raising the dead, … Continue reading –>

Sabbath: Peter and the Rock

Sabbath School Net Posted on May 13, 2016 by Sabbath School LessonMay 18, 2016avatar

Read for This Week’s Study: Gal. 4:4, Heb. 7:26, Matt. 16:13-20, Eph. 2:20, Matt. 16:21-27, Matt. 17:1-9. Memory Text:“‘But what about you?’ he asked. ‘Who do you say I am?’” (Matthew 16:15, NIV). From that time Jesus began to show to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the … Continue reading –>

Friday: Further Thought – Lord of Jews and Gentiles

Sabbath School Net Posted on May 12, 2016 by Sabbath School LessonMay 14, 2016avatar
People United Around the World

A Christian was speaking to students on a secular campus about the existence of God. After using all the common arguments, he took a different tack, saying: “You know, when I was about the age of most of you, and not believing in God, every now and then, when something would convict me that maybe … Continue reading –>

Thursday: Lord of the Gentiles

Sabbath School Net Posted on May 11, 2016 by Sabbath School LessonMay 16, 2016avatar
Jesus feeding 4000

Read Matthew 15:29-39 and compare it with Matthew 14:13-21. What are the similarities and the differences between the two stories? Many people don’t realize that there are two feedings of the multitudes in the Gospels: the first for the Jews, the second for the Gentiles. In both instances, Jesus has “compassion” for the people. It’s … Continue reading –>

Wednesday: Crumbs From the Table

Sabbath School Net Posted on May 10, 2016 by Sabbath School LessonMay 16, 2016avatar
Christ and the Syrophoenician Woman

After feeding, healing, and preaching to His own Jewish people, Jesus makes a dramatic decision. He leaves the area of the Jews and enters the region of the outsiders, the Gentiles. Read Matthew 15:21-28. How are we to understand this story? In many ways, this isn’t an easy story to read, because we’re without the … Continue reading –>

At a camp meeting 40 years later, I happened to see Dr. I. demonstrating some kind of health product, if I remember correctly. (In my mind, I see only the image of him, much older, but still looking much like he did when I was a student, with a friend by my side.) I lingered a little but did not introduce myself. I briefly wondered whether he recognized me. I’m fairly sure that I was as recognizable to him as he was to me.

Had he changed? Or did he still feel superior in his “humility”? Should I talk to him? I didn’t know how to approach him, and was busy with friends. I still don’t know whether I should have said something. (Maybe I’m just a coward.)

If God wants him to see my story, his and my identity are clear enough in this post, that God can direct him to it.
