Perfect and Complete in Christ — 2 Comments

  1. Thank you, William. What stands out to me is the girl’s testimony and the preacher’s words, “In order to be able to call Jesus your Savior, He has to actually save you from something.”

And now we need to look at how this “by faith” works, because I know from experience that we cannot become perfect by trying to become perfect.

In my life, I have to see my sinning as a symptom that I’m not connected to Jesus. So the remedy is not to “try harder” to become perfect, but to immediately go back to Jesus in confession and repentance and ask Him to direct my thoughts, emotions, and actions.

In fact, the best time to do this is at the moment of temptation – like just before allowing myself to lose my temper and say something I’ll regret. Such a temper is no longer my problem, but it was, and I can testify that my prayer, “Help! Jesus, I don’t want to be like this!” was answered instantly by taking away the pressure that was about to cause an explosion.

Paul counsels us to examine ourselves – whether we are “in the faith.” (2 Cor. 13:5) Our behavior demonstrates whether or not we are “in the faith,” and the remedy is to turn back to Jesus.

I believe that growth in the Christian life is in how much of the day we walk consciously with Jesus. Early on, we may pray for God to be with us and forget about Him soon after. Six hours later, we may remember and ask Him again. But as we grow, the time we are consciously walking by faith grows longer and longer. I’m glad that Jesus is gracious and doesn’t reject us because we don’t walk with Him all day. As long as we are growing closer to Him, He counts us as His own.

    • Absolutely Inge! Instead of focusing on being “perfect,” I try to fall more and more in love with God every day. I let Him work all the details out. In the meantime, when I feel terrible about my sins, I know that it is a good thing. When our bodies are repulsed by a virus, that is because we know the virus does not belong in our bodies, but is actually foreign to our being. Likewise, when my sin makes me feel guilty and sick, I know that it is a good thing because that means the sin is repulsive to my inner being and foreign to who I am. I am so glad that Jesus forgives, heals, and makes us whole and complete.
