Saved by Grace, Lost by Disobedience — 22 Comments

  1. That is a fine line to thread: James is answering a question about “saving faith will always result in good works”. He is not saying salvation = faith + works ; that’s the mistake most adventists make.
    Galatians 2:16
know that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified.
    Galatians 3:11
Clearly no one who relies on the law is justified before God, because “the righteous will live by faith.”

    • Kerby you explained it well and simply. Our works don’t save us just like Adam and Eve did not work their way into the Garden of Eden. But we faith will keep us in harmony with God and help us obey out of love. But even though Adam and Eve were placed in the garden but I know works of their own they lost it by disobedience. Faith will keep us in harmony with God’s Commandments.

  2. Wonderful truth, it’s a lot all bundled to key words grace, faith and obedience. All of these also component under the main: love. Ty.

  3. You have given us clear Biblical facts on this topic and only those who will not surrender their will completely to God will find God's truths hard to swallow and digest. I like how Isaiah put it, "And a highway will be there; it will be called the Way of Holiness; it will be for those who walk on that Way. The unclean will not journey on it; wicked fools will not go about on it."Isaiah 35:8 (NKJV). May God continue to bless your ministry.

  4. Adventists have a long history of teaching that FAITH+WORKS = SALVATION and before 1888 this was the norm, as far as I can tell. Until members give up all hope of ever doing enough right things or having enough rightousnes to fulfill the law, they will keep alive a hope that one day they will have enough goodness or grace or merit to receive salvation. Your friend seems to have crossed that threshold.

Now the law can be addressed in its proper role in the life of a Christian.

    • Having said all that Jorden, God has showed you what is good. The question will you take hold of His hand by faith, accepting His grace and be willing to allow Him out of love for Him to make you willing(obedient). The fact is God requires of us to do justly, love mercy, and to walk humbly with our God.
Micah 6:8. There was a man who came to his preacher and said I am so free, therefore I need God every minute of every hour of every day. The preacher said you have got it my friend.

      • Yes, of course. The requirement of the law, to do good, and do it justly, has always been demanded of us. But it is not a condition for salvation, which is freely given to sinners like you and me, whose best works are as filthy rags, and who constantly miss the mark. Not a single person has ever fully kept the law, except Jesus, and failure in even one point is failure in all. But His righteousness covers us and always will. Do you doubt it?

  5. I just love the way it is presented here. Many wants free stuff but not the obligations that comes with it. In Mathew 22, you find the parable of the Wedding Garment. The rejection of the Jews cause the invitation to go to the undeserving warmongers.
"And of those who accepted the invitation, there were some who thought only of benefiting themselves. They came to share the provisions of the feast, but had no desire to honor the king.
When the king came in to view the guests, the real character
of all was revealed. For every guest at the feast there had been provided a wedding garment. This garment was a gift from the king. By wearing it the guests showed their respect for the giver of the feast. But one man was clothed in his common citizen dress. He had refused to make the preparation required by the king. The garment provided for him at great cost he disdained to wear. Thus, he insulted his lord". COLp201
The gift is free and undeserving but loving obedience is required.

  6. What you are saying is true, William, in theory. However, in practice, if we at all allow what Ellen White calls "creature merit" to creep in, then we have indeed falsified the gospel and given new converts occasion to doubt our truthfulness and sincerity.

    I'm sure you will agree.

  7. Yes R.G. No doubt we are saved by grace alone and that is in the old testament just as much as in the new testament. But we are saved to be obedient not saved to be disobedient. Saved for disobedience is no salvation at all.

    • I always note what comes after BUT ... why isn't it an AND ? It's a straw man argument, as if anyone was suggesting that we are saved for disobedience.

The constant emphasis on the need for obedience crushes the glory and joy of the gospel. The new believer becomes burdened with requirements and soon loses hope, believing their new obedience is somehow a CONDITION of salvation.

Somehow many Adventists dont trust the work of the Holy Spirit to change lives. They feel they must keep emphasizing the law and obedience for people to be saved and stay saved. This happens especially at times when people need encouragement and hope. There is no hope in our personal obedience.

      Please, no more "yes, BUT!"

        • No one is saying "it's ok to be disobedient or to sin."

We are saying only that our behavior doesn't save us, the blood of Jesus saves us.

Paul was also accused of endorsing sin when he preached that we are saved by grace. This accusation almost always comes from closet legalists.

            • Truly, William, I am having a hard time being sure just what you are trying to say. I find nothing objectionable in what you assert. The difficulty lies in your seeming discomfort with my comments, and with others like them. I must concur with Jordan that you could have avoided any misunderstandings by using "and" rather than "but." The gospel of grace can stand on its own, without the need for constant reminders as to our Christian duty. Had anyone even hinted at the idea that obedience were unnecessary, I might have understood any angst on your part, but no one did. Love is a far better motive than duty, in any case, as I am sure you will agree.

            • Hi RG the thought of any discomfort with the comments never crossed my mind. Sorry for any confusing comments. All is good. 🙂 Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and check and reply to comments on my cell phone. Maybe I should wait until I am more awake. LOL

      • I'd say, "Good point" to your suggestion to use "and" rather than "but" when linking faith and obedience.

And then I thought I'd check William's post for the "but's" he used, and I found that they are all in Scripture references! 🙂

  8. Thank you Pastor William for explaining how important obedience is, because nothing has changed since the garden on this subject. And like the Law, they both existed before the fall, just look at the story of Satan before the fall, but yet man with his fallen nature looks at both of these eternal important truths, as something impossible and bad, even going as far to say, the law was done away with, or obedience is being legalistic.
When really, it’s our fallen nature that is bad and needs to be changed, and the good news is that it all comes from God, it’s His work in us, even the repentance needed to turn to God, and from sin, comes from Him. Was this not the problem with the first covenant? It was the peoples response, saying, this we will do, instead of realizing their helpless condition and really seeking God. That’s why Christ says, I am the Vine, you are the branch and if you abide in Me, you will produce good fruit. And some times that fruit comes through trials, just like it did for Jesus, who being perfect, was made perfect going through trials Him self, see Hebrews 5:9, and being obedient even unto the cross.
After all are we not in the end judged by the Law, see James 2:12 and Romans 2:12? Of which proves the need to the connection to the Vine of Christ, and for His work in us, not our work, our work in to abide and trust day by day, for by beholding we become changed. Just remember this, there are three connections we need with God, belief in God, trust in God and loyalty to God, or another word for loyalty, is fear, used in the three angels message of Rev 14, and the only way we can show this is through obedience to Gods Law, see Deuteronomy 13:4 & 28:58-59.

  9. I obey the words of the Lord because I love Him. What else can I do to such great love as demonstrated on the cross and the daily graces and mercies I experience every day.

Sadly, I admit that I often fall short in my faithfulness to Him. Fortunately, He never leaves me alone even in my struggles. He is ever faithful. One day, as He promised, all this struggle with sin will end, and it will be eternal bliss.

    Amen!
