Going Through the Motions — 4 Comments

  1. I have been amazed to find out that many of our brethren in North America have a problem with the foot washing.
I suppose some might have a problem where I live as well–and I may simply not be aware of it.

Either way, I am in danger of being on autopilot when washing feet during communion. I really don’t think about it as much as I just do it. At most, asking someone is weird/awkward, but that is the hardest part for me.

  2. When we prepare for the foot washing, we are supposed to think about anyone we hurt or offended and make amends prior to the experience. The reflecting part seems to be gone. Most people don’t do anything wrong. Then they should be encouraging and supportive but usually they are the ones who are critical and judgemental. I look forward to the day when we are truly Spirit led as a church. Thanks Lillian.

At a camp meeting 40 years later, I happened to see Dr. I. demonstrating some kind of health product, if I remember correctly. (In my mind, I see only the image of him, much older, but still looking much like he did when I was a student, with a friend by my side.) I lingered a little but did not introduce myself. I briefly wondered whether he recognized me. I’m fairly sure that I was as recognizable to him as he was to me.

Had he changed? Or did he still feel superior in his “humility”? Should I talk to him? I didn’t know how to approach him, and was busy with friends. I still don’t know whether I should have said something. (Maybe I’m just a coward.)

If God wants him to see my story, his and my identity are clear enough in this post, that God can direct him to it.
