04: The Bible – The Authoritative Source of Our Theology – Teaching Plan
Key Thought: The role and authority of Scripture in theology is not the same in all churches. Five influences impact our interpretation of Scripture: tradition, experience, culture, reason, and the Bible itself.

1. Have a volunteer read Mark 7:1-13.
- Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
- What does this teach us about how Jesus reacted to human traditions in His day?
- Personal Application: What are the things we do as a church that could be put under the label of tradition? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: One of your relatives states: “How can we distinguish between the Word of God and tradition? Are there traditions found in the Word that are not Biblical truth today?” How would you respond to your relative?
2. Have a volunteer read 2 Corinthians 11:1-3.
- Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point is in this passage.
- What warning is found in this passage? Does this tell us anything about trusting our experiences
- Personal Application: How could Satan corrupt our minds from the simplicity of the gospel? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: One of your friends states, “I have a faith that shows love to God and love for others. My faith is proven because of how He makes me feel in doing good. My love isn’t guided or dependent on laws, rules, and regulations. I am free in Christ.” How would you respond to your friend?
3. Have a volunteer read I John 2:15-17..
- Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
- What does it mean that we should not love the things of the world? How can we live in the world and not have a worldly mindset?
- Personal Application: What aspects of our culture are in complete opposition to Biblical faith? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: One of your neighbors states, “How can we stand firm against the inroads of non-Biblical cultural pushes in radical in your face feminism, homosexual behavior, anti-authoritarianism, and sexual promiscuity?” How would you respond to your neighbor?
4. Have a volunteer read 2 Corinthians 10:4-6.
- Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
- Why is obedience to Christ in our thoughts so important?
- Personal Application: How do we bring our thoughts into obedience of Christ? We can’t control our thoughts, can we?. Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: Think of one person who needs to hear a message from this week’s lesson. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.
