- The Bible and the Bible only. What do you think of the statement in this week’s lesson guide that as “Protestants, we must maintain the Bible as the ultimate doctrinal authority.” Of course this is a reassuring creed for our church to follow: The Bible and the Bible alone. Should we work to bring fellow Protestants into 100 percent acceptance of that creed when the vast majority of them choose to worship on Sunday rather than on the 7th day of the Bible? Or will the holiness of the seventh-day Sabbath be revealed to these people at the end of time?
- Scripture as the ruling norm. Why is it important for us to accept Scripture as the sole creed for our faith? Paul was a church leader a couple of thousand years ago. Does his admonition not to go “beyond what is written” apply to us today? Can we point to a strong, bible-based authority for our every belief? For example, does the Bible tell us we should have a strong educational system for our young people? Including our schools, does every practice of our church derive Biblical support for its role?
- The unity of Scripture. “God-breathed.” What a powerful statement that is of the authenticity of the Bible and our continual need to follow and study its principles. Is it true that every principle of Scripture is divinely inspired, or “breathed” into God’s plan for His people? Without such a strong Bible-based theological structure, who could we turn to for doctrines that would lead us to Jesus? If we are puzzled by something in the Bible, how can we solve our perplexity? When was the last time you thanked God for a unified body of Scripture that we can follow without hesitation?
- The clarity of Scripture. What kind of a church would we have if the words of the Bible were beyond our understanding? Would we hire people to tell us what we should believe? Or would Biblical understanding be left up to the elders and pastors? Comment on our lesson’s summary of how we should deal with portions of Scripture we find too hard to understand. How should we deal with difficulties in understanding the Bible?
- Scripture interprets scripture. What is context? Think of some examples in the Bible of historical, financial, and personality context. How can we use context to understand challenging portions of the Bible? How does scripture interpret scripture? Can you think of examples of how this happens? Think of an example you have come across of a Bible text that is “taken out of context”? How can you and I work to avoid such problems?
- Sola Scriptura and Ellen White. We possess hundreds of devotional and doctrinal writings by Ellen White in our church today. What is the relationship of Ellen White’s writings to the Bible? Is there ever a temptation by some to accept the writings of Ellen White over the teachings of Scripture? How can that be possible?
