07: Sharing the Word – Discussion Starters
- Symbols of God’s Word. The Bible is loaded with symbols, some of them enticing and good, others puzzling and even confusing. What symbols do we find pointing to the Word of God as we study to draw men and women to Jesus? Jeremiah uses the fire and hammer as symbols of God’s Word. How do these harsh symbols attract us to a Christian life? Then there’s the symbol of seed. What are some ways that we can we plant the seeds of God’s Word in the lives of others? Finally, we see bread as a symbol of the Word of God. How is God’s Word like bread, fresh from the oven and so satisfying to our bodies?
- The creative power of God’s Word. Here’s a remarkable statement from our lesson this week: “The Word of God is a creative Word. The audible Word that proceeds from His mouth has the power to create everything that it proclaims.” Creating something from nothing, calling the worlds into existence. If you’ve ever wondered how God created this world, here’s the answer. He created life. And that was just the beginning. What else did God’s creative energy produce? How much power does God possess to accomplish all that He has done and will do?
- The benefits of studying God’s Word. “By beholding we become changed.” How does this work? Consider 2 Corinthians 3:18. Is it possible to understand and behold Jesus by studying Him in the Bible? Can Scripture change us to become more like Jesus? How? Witnessing, our lesson declares, is not sharing what we believe or think. Then what is it about? God’s Word can incredibly bless our lives and when this happens, what is the result?
- Applying God’s Word. Some day when you have lots of time, search out the 3,000 promises of God as revealed in Scripture. What will they tell you about God? What is different about each of these promises? How does each of these promises give us the assurance that His love is deep and lasts forever? How can you and I claim the blessings revealed in each of these promises? Do you ever feel that not all the blessings God speaks of in Scripture can actually reach you? How can you find hope in every promise God has given you?
- Sharing the Word. Ah, now we come to the work we must do once we recognize the spiritual blessings God pours upon us. “Good news,” our lesson assures us, “is for sharing.” Sharing with whom? How? Peter said (recorded in Acts 4:20) that speaking of the good news from a walk with Jesus simply cannot be ignored. Ellen White commented that we won’t be able to hold our peace “if we are clothed with the righteousness of Christ and are filled with the joy of His indwelling Spirit.” A beautiful promise God wants to fulfill in our lives.
