2: Covenant Primer – Teaching Plan
Key Thought: God seeks to reestablish the loving relationship by means of a covenant. It signifies a committed relationship between God and us and an arrangement for bringing us into harmony with Him and giving us an arrangement for bringing us in harmony with Him and giving us salvation.

1. Have a volunteer read Genesis 6:18.
- Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point is in this passage.
- What is the essence of a covenant? What is Noah’s part in that covenant? Which part do we play in that covenant?
- Personal Application: What part does grace appear in God’s covenant with Noah? Is there grace in the new covenant God made with His people in Hebrews 8:10, 10:16? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: One of your friends states, “Why did God tell Noah that He was establishing His covenant with Noah and his family?” How would you respond to your friend?
2. Have a volunteer read Genesis 12:1-3.
- Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
- What specific promises did God make to Abram?
- Personal Application: What does it mean that in Abraham shall all families of the earth be blessed? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: One of your relatives states: “In referring to families being blessed, this covenant seems to be relating to marriage and relationships/ How does this covenant seem like a marriage vow, and how is it different?“ How would you respond to your relative?
3. Have a volunteer read Exodus 6:1-8.
- Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
- What covenant was God talking about here? How was the Exodus to be a fulfillment of the covenant promises?
- Personal Application: What parallels can we find between what God promised here and what He promised Noah before the flood? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: One of your neighbors states, “What is similar or different in this covenant with Israel compared to the new covenant of Hebrews 8:10 and 10:16?” How would you respond to your neighbor?
4. Have a volunteer read Jeremiah 31:31-33.
- Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
- What does God want in His covenants with His people?
- Personal Application: How do you understand the idea of the law being written in our hearts?” Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: Think of one person who needs to hear a message from this week’s lesson. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.
