2 The Ministry Begins – Discussion Questions
- “Come follow Me…” Our lesson begins by wondering if we all tend to think, sometimes, that we don’t really know why we’re here and what we’re doing where we are. Do you ever sense doubts that deep? Or at least wonder what your purpose in life is? “Another day, another dollar.” Why are we tempted to let ourselves drift away from any purpose or goal to our lives? Can we say goodbye to such a desolate situation? How?
- John the Baptist and Present Truth. John the Baptist cried out to the people, “Repent!” and what happened? In what way was John the Baptist’s theme “present truth”? When you talk about the Bible, do you ever think to point out the tremendous contribution Old Testament books have for us in this present world? Can you or I be a Christian without firmly placing Jesus at the center of our lives? our plans? our activities? How do we do that?
- The Contrast in the Wilderness. Here’s an interesting perspective from your lesson’s authors. Can you picture Jesus, equal to the highest almighty God, Living a life surrounded by people filled with hate for Him? And then can you imagine Satan, the epitome of selfish greed, imagining himself as the chief executive of all the universe? Does it help sometimes to think about the infinite gap between Christ as the devil and the choices we make, sometimes minute by minute, about which of these beings we will choose as our master?
- Temptations. How can the belief that there is absolutely no excuse for sin draw us closer to a deep relationship with Jesus? Wouldn’t you rather be able to go to God with a box or at least a file folder of all your reasons for each sin? Is it really true that our sins are all our fault? Have you ever tried to cover up the sinfulness of something you want to see, do, think, or experience? What is the result when you try such an approach? How can we have confidence that we can confront and overcome sins cast in our path?
- Zebulun and Naphtali… What do these names mean to us today: Zebulun and Naphtali? Since these two men were sons of Jacob, doesn’t that qualify them for status as holy men? If not, why not? Why did Jesus choose to go and live in this part of the Holy Land that we call Galilee? Why is it that people living in surroundings that are gorgeous in every respect seem to have problems with selfishness and sinfulness? Why do you think Jesus chose to go and minister to these people?
- The Call of the Fishermen. Was Galilee a metropolitan area populated by people with a good education? Was fishing there at the time considered to be an occupation for the wealthy? What does Ellen White say about the qualifications of the fishermen who were first recruited by Jesus? Hint: their schooling? their families? their skills in the field of fishing?
