Wednesday: The Duration of God’s Law

Sabbath School Net Posted on August 1, 2017 by Sabbath School LessonAugust 4, 2017avatar
The Word of God Endures Forever

Does Paul’s statement about the law being added at Mount Sinai mean that it did not exist previously? If not, what was the difference before and after Mount Sinai? Read Gen. 9:5-6; Gen. 18:19; Gen. 26:5; Gen. 39:7-10; Exod. 16:22-26. God did not need to reveal His law to Abraham with thunder, lightning, and a penalty of death (Exod. 19:10-23). Why, … Continue reading –>

Tuesday: The Purpose of the Law

Covenant with the Lord

In Galatians 3:19-29 Paul makes multiple references to “the law.” What law is Paul primarily referring to in this section of Galatians? Some, believing that the word until in verse 19 (ESV) indicates that this law was only temporary, have thought the passage must refer to the ceremonial law, because the purpose of that law was fulfilled at the cross and … Continue reading –>

6: The Priority of the Promise – Discussion Starters

Sabbath School Net Posted on July 31, 2017 by Joyce GriffithJuly 31, 2017Joyce Griffith

Memory text or quandary? The memory text for this week is “For if the inheritance comes by the law, it no longer comes by promise; but God gave it to Abraham by a promise.” (Galatians 3:18 ESV). Based on this text, does our inheritance as Christians come to us by law or by promise? Explain … Continue reading –>

Singing with Inspiration – Lesson 6: The Priority of the Promise

Sabbath School Net Posted on July 31, 2017 by Corinne KnopperJuly 31, 2017avatar

The Memory Text instantly brings to mind: Hymn 518, “Standing on the Promises” followed closely by Hymn 331, “O Jesus, I Have Promised”. This theme is presented again in Thursday’s lesson. Sunday and Monday’s lessons include the word “Faith” for which there are so many hymns that may be chosen: Hymn 533, “O for a … Continue reading –>

Monday: Faith and Law

Sabbath School Net Posted on July 30, 2017 by Sabbath School LessonAugust 3, 2017avatar
Faith

Faith and Law (Romans 3:31) Paul has argued strongly for the supremacy of faith in a person’s relationship with God. He has repeatedly stated that neither circumcision nor any other “works of law” are a prerequisite to salvation, “because by works of the law no one will be justified” (Gal. 2:16, ESV). Moreover, it is not … Continue reading –>

We’re Still Family!

Circle of Friends of all Races

I imagine when you have spirited disagreements in your Sabbath school that you don’t call each others fools, but that is what Paul does in his letter to the Galatians.  O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you that you should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed among you as … Continue reading –>

Sunday: Law and Faith

Sabbath School Net Posted on July 29, 2017 by Sabbath School LessonAugust 5, 2017avatar
Precious Faith

Law and Faith (Gal. 3:15-18) Even if his opponents conceded that Abraham’s life was characterized primarily by faith, Paul knew that they still would have questions about why God gave the law to Israel about four centuries after Abraham. Did not the giving of the law nullify any previous arrangement? What is the point of Paul’s … Continue reading –>

Sabbath: The Priority of the Promise

Sabbath School Net Posted on July 28, 2017 by Sabbath School LessonAugust 1, 2017avatar

Read for This Week’s Study: Gal. 3:15-20, Gen. 9:11-17, Matt. 5:17-20, Exod. 16:22-26, Gen. 15:1-6. Memory Text: “For if the inheritance comes by the law, it no longer comes by promise; but God gave it to Abraham by a promise” (Galatians 3:18, ESV). A top adviser to a president was asked: “Has the president kept all the promises that he made during … Continue reading –>

Friday: Further Thought – Old Testament Faith

Spectacles on Bible

Further Thought: “Upon Christ as our substitute and surety was laid the iniquity of us all. He was counted a transgressor, that He might redeem us from the condemnation of the law. The guilt of every descendant of Adam was pressing upon His heart. The wrath of God against sin, the terrible manifestation of His … Continue reading –>

Thursday: Redeemed From a Curse

Sabbath School Net Posted on July 26, 2017 by Sabbath School LessonAugust 10, 2017avatar
Job looking upwards, three friends

(Gal. 3:9-14) Paul’s opponents were no doubt stunned by his bold words in Galatians 3:10. They certainly did not think themselves to be under a curse; if anything, they expected to be blessed for their obedience. Yet, Paul is unequivocal: “For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for … Continue reading –>

At a camp meeting 40 years later, I happened to see Dr. I. demonstrating some kind of health product, if I remember correctly. (In my mind, I see only the image of him, much older, but still looking much like he did when I was a student, with a friend by my side.) I lingered a little but did not introduce myself. I briefly wondered whether he recognized me. I’m fairly sure that I was as recognizable to him as he was to me.

Had he changed? Or did he still feel superior in his “humility”? Should I talk to him? I didn’t know how to approach him, and was busy with friends. I still don’t know whether I should have said something. (Maybe I’m just a coward.)

If God wants him to see my story, his and my identity are clear enough in this post, that God can direct him to it.
