Sabbath: Controversies — 45 Comments

  1. Most of the controversy Jesus had during his ministry were with the conservative Pharisees. Does that mean that conservatism is a sin? I am guessing that during this coming week and probably several more times during this study we will have the opportunity to explore this question more deeply. Of course, I am tempted to answer immediately, but that would spoil the discussion. Keep that question in mind as we study and, even more, think what the implications are for Seventh-day Adventists now.

[I have been away from the keyboard for a few days this week while undergoing several medical procedures. I have been diagnosed with bowel cancer. The prognosis is good but there is major surgery scheduled in about a month. We were alerted to my condition by a Faecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) which we have done every two years. I pray that others will be reminded that early detection has the potential to save lives.]

  4. Maurice God has you in His care. He knew you from the foundation of the world. Before you were conceived He thought of you and what He was going to do when this cancer showed up. He has the answer to death and of course to disease - all disease. He calls each star (and there are trillions of them) by its name. Ps. 147:4 Great is our Lord and mighty in power: His understanding is infinite. vs. 5. Yet He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. Ps 147:3.

"Keep your wants, your joys, your sorrows, your cares, and your fears before God. You cannot burden Him; you cannot weary Him. He who numbers the hairs of your head is not indifferent to the wants of His children. “The Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.” James 5:11. His heart of love is touched by our sorrows and even by our utterances of them. Take to Him everything that perplexes the mind. Nothing is too great for Him to bear, for He holds up worlds, He rules over all the affairs of the universe. Nothing that in any way concerns our peace is too small for Him to notice. There is no chapter in our experience too dark for Him to read; there is no perplexity too difficult for Him to unravel. No calamity can befall the least of His children, no anxiety harass the soul, no joy cheer, no sincere prayer escape the lips, of which our heavenly Father is unobservant, or in which He takes no immediate interest. “He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.” Psalm 147:3."

"The relations between God and each soul are as distinct and full as though there were not another soul upon the earth to share His watchcare, not another soul for whom He gave His beloved Son." Maurice, I know that God has this. He gave His Son for you and all of us.

  7. One of my favorite sayings of Jesus is: ”A slave is not a permanent member of the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So, if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:35-36.
The following sentence tells me what it is that makes me a member of His family: ”I know you are Abraham’s descendants, but you are trying to kill Me because My word has no place within you ...“ John 8:37.

Rom.8:2 - ”For in Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set you free from the law of sin and death.
Gal.5:1 - ”It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not be encumbered once more by a yoke of slavery.”

Jesus did not concern Himself with the dangers associated with threads coming from those who cannot perceive His actions correctly; He exposed them to show who their master is. They cannot ‘understand’ Him because they are enslaved by the Spirit of this World which has taken hold of their heart and mind.

Jesus came to set us free from the stranglehold by the spirit of this world on our heart and mind which made us slaves to sin. When He opend our eyes and we repented from following the deceiver, He brought into our heart and mind the Light of the Holy Spirit with powers to expel all evil.
