7: Covenant at Sinai – Teaching Plan
Key Thought: The covenant God formed at Sinai with Israel was a covenant of grace. Israel responded positively, but they lacked a true faith motivated by love. They corrupted it into a salvation by works system.

1. Have a volunteer read Exodus 6:6,7.
- Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point is in this passage.
- What does it mean that God “redeemed” Israel from Egypt?
- Personal Application: How does God ransom us from slavery to sin? What does this tell us about our worth? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: One of your friends states, “How was God’s covenant to Israel designed to maintain Israel’s physical and spiritual freedom? How did Israel response to that covenant affect their physical and spiritual freedom?” How would you respond to your friend?
2. Have a volunteer read Exodus 19:4, Deuteronomy 1:29-31…
- Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
- In what manner did God bring Israel from Egypt to Sinai?
- Personal Application: How is God’s interest in us contrast with our interest for one another? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: “How has God ever shown you His unselfish interest in you? Do you have any experiences in that?” How would you respond to your friend?
3. Have a volunteer read Exodus 19:5,6.
- Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
- Is this statement given as a part of the old covenant, or does it still hold true as part of the new covenant?
- Personal Application: In what way should our personal one-on-one experience with the Lord reflect what God spoke in Exodus 19:5,6? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: One of your relatives states: “Aren’t the Jews still God’s chosen people? They are a holy nation and a kingdom of priests. Do you believe in replacement theology where the Jews have been replaced by the Christian church as Israel – over comers with God?“ How would you respond to your relative?
4. Have a volunteer read Exodus 19:8.
- Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
- What was the problem with the first covenant?
- Personal Application: Why can’t our good works make us acceptable to God? Does that mean our good works plays no part in our salvation?” Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: Think of one person who needs to hear a message from this week’s lesson. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.
