The Character of Job – Teaching Plan
Key Thought: Job, before his suffering, revealed a personality in harmony with God. He had high ethical values, personal integrity, and a heart for the poor.
1. Have a volunteer read Job 1:1, 1:8.
a. Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
b. How blameless is blameless? Everybody has sinned, so how could Job be considered upright and avoiding evil?
c. Personal Application : What are the traits Job has that are most appealing to you? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study : One of your relatives states: “Job could afford to be of a great character. He was born into graces and money. He had it all. He didn’t have to scramble like most people do, so he had less temptations.” How would you respond to your relatives?
2. Have a volunteer read Job 29:8-17.
a. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point is in this passage.
b. What does this tell us about how others viewed Job and how he treated those in need?
c. Personal Application : What choices can we make that will help the Lord work in us more fully? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study : One of your friends states, “We can’t obtain a perfect character here on earth. We continue to fail and fall into sin. Anyone who claims otherwise is a liar or self-deceived.” How would you respond to your friend?
3. Have a volunteer read Job 31:19-23
a. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
b. How do you feel about someone like Job who seems to be consistently good and righteous in all aspects of his life?
c. Personal Application: What in your life brings glory to God? What in your life might need improvement or focus? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study : One of your neighbors states, “I don’t trust perfect people. I don’t think there is such a thing. Everyone has troubles, everyone has faults. I’d rather know people with their faults than someone who everyone looks at as perfect.” How would you respond to your neighbor?
4. Have a volunteer read Job 31:24-29
a. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
b. What are the elements in Job’s character that show a consistency in his life?
c. Personal Application : What part does humility and recognizing our place in the scope of things from God’s perspective help us be the people God wants us to be?
d. Case Study : Think of one person who needs to hear a message from this week’s lesson. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.
