Do you Have Enough Faith, NOT to Ask Jesus to Calm the Storm? — 8 Comments

  1. Thank you pastor William for this ‘provocative’ perspective. You have the gift of being able to turn popular views upside down on the head so we can get a different even unique perspective of the truth.
We just want the pain or disease (physical, emotional and/or spiritual) to go away immediately but remain unwilling to take the unpleasant uncomfortable possibly time consuming and expensive remedy. This is our problem.

  2. There's a song that says, "if it wasn't for the rain, there wouldn't be a rainbow" Dolly Parton once said, "If you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain".

Unfortunately it's a reality that we don't like. We want blue skies and calm seas in life, but that isn't reality. After all, Jesus did make it clear that in this life we would have tribulation. However He didn't stop there, he said, "but be of good cheer for I have overcome the world". He has promised to never leave us or forsake us, even to the end of the world. That's comforting to know because the closing scenes are depicted as being especially tumultuous.

It is in the storms of life that I have seen my Savior more clearly and have been drawn to Him more nearly. When I have cried out to Him, "where are you?!" I have heard His calm and comforting voice say, "I'm still here".

The lyrics of an old Bruce Carroll song called "I'm Still Here" come to mind. "I'm still here, I'm still here.
No, you have not been abandoned
And though you can't see through your tears
    I'm still here

Sometimes there are no easy answers Yet My promise remains true
I may not take your trials away
But I'll always take you through".

Jesus didn't say, "let's see if we can get to the other side" (of the Sea of Gallilee). He said, "let's go to the other side". Like the Disciples of old we need to remember that if Jesus is in your boat, it's going to float. It may take on water, but it's going to float, and make it to the other side of the storm. When we look back at the storm we will see His rainbow in the skies.

I have not yet gotten to the point in my spiritual development that I can say regarding the storms of life, "Thank you Lord! May I have another?"

Steven Curtis Chapman and Scott Krippayne have both sung a song which I too have sung through my storms in life. The title is; Sometimes He Calms the Storm
"All who sail the sea of faith
    Find out before too long
How quickly blue skies can grow dark
    And gentle winds grow strong
Suddenly fear is like white water
    Pounding on the soul
    Still we sail on knowing
That our Lord is in control
    Sometimes He calms the storm
With a whispered peace be still
    He can settle any sea
But it doesn't mean He will
    Sometimes He holds us close
And lets the wind and waves go wild
    Sometimes He calms the storm
And other times He calms His child
He has a reason for each trial
That we pass through in life
    And though we're shaken
We cannot be pulled apart from Christ
No matter how the driving rain beats down
On those who hold to faith
A heart of trust will always
    Be a quiet peaceful place

If Jesus is in our boat it's going to float! He is taking us to the other side. Perhaps that is why when Jesus returns the throne of God is encircled with a rainbow. It's Him saying "the storms are over. We're going to the other side!" Shalom!

  3. I just have to tell you my recent experience of riding out the storm with Jesus. I was on my way back home. We were coming in for a landing at Denver Airport. We were on final aproach I always send up a silent prayer at take off and landing. The aproah was flawless it was quite bumpy.I would estimate at about 700 feet the plane suddenly took nose dive and before I could say Lord save us, the nose immediately came up to normal aproach pitch.
    Psalms 34:7.
