Key Thought: We are justified by faith which leads to obedience out of love, and not a hope of reward or fear of punishment.

A. Ask what the main point of this passage is.
B. What does it mean to be justified?
C. Personal application: Knowing you are not justified by the deeds law, what is the point of keeping the law, if any? See John 14:15 and Galatians 5:6.
D. Case Study: A guest at potluck after church tells you, he knows we are justified by faith in the New Testament, but weren’t the people in the Old Testament justified by obeying the law? He mentions that we have grace in the New Testament, but works in the Old Testament. Where in the Bible would find answers to his question?
2. Have a volunteer read Romans 3:23-24
A. Ask a volunteer what the main point of this passage is.
B. What is sin? Hint: John 16:9 1 John 3:4
C. Personal application: If I am justified freely by grace will obedience, good works and righteousness by seen in my life? See Romans 1:5. Ephesians 2:9-10. Titus 2:11-12.
D. Case Study: You pick up your neighbor from a tavern, in the middle of the night, because he spent all his money on alcohol and can’t afford a cab. On the way home he says we all are sinners so he figures he will never change. What do you tell your neighbor?
3. Have a Volunteer read Romans 3:25-26.
A. Ask what the main thought of this passage is.
B. What does it mean that God passed over the sins that were previously committed?
C. Personal application: What things are seen in our lives when we have faith in Jesus? See Galatians 5:6. Revelation 14:12.
D. Case Study: An older relative is sick and near death. She tells you the closer she gets to death, the more doubts she has about her salvation and is now questioning her faith. How do you respond?
4. Have a volunteer read Romans 3:27-28.
A. Ask what the main thought of this passage is.
B. What is the law of faith?
C. Personal application: In this passage as well as Ephesians 2:8-9 Paul tells us we shouldn’t boast. Why?
D. Case Study: A friend from Sabbath school class called you this week, saying they ran across James 2:24, and are confused since it seems to contradict the passage in this week’s lesson. What do you say to your friend?
