Some Lessons from Job – Teaching Plan
Key Thought: The book of Job is complex, but what stands out is that it points us to our Redeemer, salvation, and a life of faith.
Lesson 14 for December 31, 2016
1. Have a volunteer read Job 1:8-11.
a. Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
b. How does this help us understand the role of Satan in the prevailing evil in the world?
c. Personal Application : What examples do you have of Satan’s influence in your life? How can we be protected against him? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study : One of your relatives states: “When someone says, ‘the devil made me do it’, I think that’s just an excuse. People are responsible for their own actions, the devil doesn’t have anything to do with it.” How would you respond to your relatives?
2. Have a volunteer read John 8:1-11.
a. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point is in this passage.
b. What did Jesus reveal here that shows what these men and most people have a lack of?
c. Personal Application : How can we learn to have more compassion for the suffering, even if it is a result of their own wrong actions? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study : One of your friends states, “There are too many self-righteous people in the church. They look at themselves as high and lifted up, while looking at others with a severe and critical eye.” How would you respond to your friend?
3. Have a volunteer read Job 2:3-8
a. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
b. How did Job respond to his personal suffering? How did it affect his faith?
c. Personal Application: Have you experienced suffering in such a way that it has brought you closer to God? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study : One of your neighbors states, “Why is it that some people go through life with no troubles, sickness, or trials; and others seem to amass them one right after another? Is one more faithful and tested more? Does God protect some more than others? If so, how and why? Is it random: time, place, and circumstance?.” How would you respond to your neighbor?
4. Have a volunteer read Job 1:21,22.
a. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
b. Can suffering be considered a temptation or test of our faith, or are we looking at our own sufferings too grandly?
c. Personal Application : What texts do you hold onto that give you hope in times of trouble? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study : Think of one person who needs to hear a message from this week’s lesson. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.
