Major Themes in Peter – Teaching Plan
- Key Thought: Peter wrote about five areas of theology :
1. Christ’s sacrifice for our salvation
2. Godly conduct
3. The hope of Christ’s soon return
4. God’s plan for order in the church
5. The role of Scripture in our lives..
1. Have a volunteer read 1 Peter 1:15-17.
a. Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
b. What Iis Godly conduct? What is being holy in all conversation?
c. Personal Application : How can we learn to encourage one another in ways that are not judgmental? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study : One of your relatives states: “I can’t be holy. I have a lot of flaws in my character. Many were developed as a child and are ingrained in me. Others are hereditary and I can’t do anything about them. This is an impossible task.” Do you tend to agree or disagree with your relative?
2. Have a volunteer read 2 Peter 3:9-11.
a. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point is in this passage.
b. Are you fearful of the judgment? Should we be concerned with our judgment hour?
c. Personal Application : As a Christian, are there any other options besides faith and obedience in your life? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study : One of your friends states, “I think this is just a threat to get people to obey God. He is loving and long-suffering. I don’t think He will actually destroy the world with fire. He will eventually save everyone.” How would you respond to your friend?
3. Have a volunteer read I Peter 5:1-5.
a. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
b. How does submitting to order in the church and society help prepare us for God’s order in heaven?
c. Personal Application: In what ways has my relationship with Christ make a difference in my relationship with others? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study: One of your neighbors states, “Why do you always go with what the Bible says? Don’t you know it’s easy for people to misunderstand and misinterpret the Bible? Only a trained priest can rightly divide the Word of truth. That’s why we have the Church and its traditions to guide us.” How would you respond to your neighbor?
4. Have a volunteer read 2 Peter 3:16.
a. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
b. Why were Paul’s writings hard to understand? Did Peter consider Paul’s writings as inspired?.
c. Personal Application : How do you know that the interpretation of Scripture by the SDA Church is the correct one? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study : Think of one person who needs to hear a message from this week’s lesson. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.
