Peter on the Great Controversy – Teaching Plan
Key Thought: Peter knows what happens in the face of unbelief. His emphasis is on believers living a life worthy of their calling and reflective of their election.
Peter and the Great Controversy March 5-11, 2016
1. Have a volunteer read I Peter 2:9,10.
a. Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
b. In what ways is the world against living a life according to God’s purpose?
c. Personal Application : If we considered ourselves God’s priesthood and thought about it before we responded to pressures from others, or a specific situation; would we respond differently? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study : One of your relatives states: “I don’t see much difference in the lives of those who claim to be Christian and those who don’t. Shouldn’t there be a difference What is it supposed to be?” How would you respond to your relative?
2. Have a volunteer read 2 Peter 1:19-21.
a. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point is in this passage.
b. What does Peter say about prophecy compared to his eyewitness account that is important for us today?
c. Personal Application : How confident are you in the prophecies concerning Christ’s first coming? Are you as confident in the ones concerning the future and the second coming as well? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study : One of your friends states, “People have been prophesying about Christ coming for hundreds of years. It’s a fantasy to believe that He is going to magically appear in the sky someday.” How would you respond to your neighbor?
3. Have a volunteer read 2 Peter 3:3-7.
a. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
b. Why are there so many scoffers who do not believe in the second coming according to Peter?
c. Personal Application: Can you say that you are living according to God’s will? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study : One of your neighbors states, “Is there a relationship between faith in the second coming and morality – right and wrong behavior? Or is that more based on cultural influences?” How would you respond to your neighbor?
4. Have a volunteer read 2 Peter 3:8-14.
a. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
b. In what ways are peer pressures a stumbling block to living according to God’s will?
c. Personal Application: Is it possible for us to hasten Christ’s second coming, or have we passed that point? How could we hasten His coming? Share your thoughts.
d. Case Study : Think of one person who needs to hear a message from this week’s lesson. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.
