Through Jesus, We Can Fulfill Our Destiny — 11 Comments

  1. Something to be thankful for today!

Thank you for your thoughts concerning life and death! It will be another reason to go back in scripture as we explore the various lives of God’s people and their accomplishments for Him during their time on earth.

We thank the Lord God for keeping Adam and Eve alive after yielding to Satan’s cruel temptation in the Garden of Eden because He told them that in the day that they eat the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil that they would surely die!

Because of His amazing grace, they were able to repent of their sins, be forgiven, and for Adam to live for over nine hundred years. They truly fulfilled their purpose for living before he fell asleep awaiting the resurrection.

Thank God for giving all of us a second chance to fulfill a purpose for living our lives for Him.

  2. In my feeble human brain it is difficult to fathom the concept that each person will remain alive until their purpose for living is fulfilled. For example the loss of a young person who tragically dies in an auto accident or loss of both parents with children. I understand this loss may be a gain to some in witnessing the persons life but so many pass away and leave behind agony for children or loved ones that still need them.

    • Hi Jennifer. Please understand that this promise is only for those who have committed themselves to Jesus and His purpose. This article does not claim that every person who has died has fulfilled their purpose in life. And even when a young person who belongs to Jesus dies, who are we to judge what that person’s purpose was? Several years ago, I mentioned this in a sermon, and a mother who had lost her young son told me it was very comforting. So yes, while death does bring grief and heartache, this truth can also be a comfort.

    • I think the quote is suggesting that God will protect someone’s life until they have fullfilled the work they were meant to do. In a sense it is true as God is sovereign. But when there is free-will involved these things are tricky.

I have mentioned before that my mother died when I was 7. She had cancer and it was quite aggressive. However, I learned much later from my sister who now works in cancer research and was able to access my mom’s records that my mom stopped chemo before the doctors wanted her to. In the 80s chemo was pretty awful and it made her really sick. She also had so many church people telling her to try all sorts of natural remedies and so on to cure her. She made that choice and God did extend her life a bit longer than the doctors predicted, but she ultimately could not win that battle.

I respect her choices as she faced a very difficult situation, but I can’t help but wish she’d listened to the doctors. Would I have benefitted from another year with her? I think I would have. Many other things would have been different, perhaps.

Now obviously if God wanted her to live for some very crucial reason, he could have healed her. But I also believe He works with our choices and the decisions of others too. So I don’t fully agree George Whitefield’s quote even though it sounds great. It is not scripture anyway, so consider it accordingly.

  3. Thanks and Happy Sabbath to all!

“For to me to live is Christ…”
I can still picture the brown plaque hanging prominently on our living room wall. My parents, mainly Mom, intentionally placed it there as a constant reminder of the need for our sanctified Christlikeness in conduct.

Our spiritual condition has to be that of Christ, in order for us, through Him, to survive daily life lived for Him. Yes. Our spiritual condition has to be that of Christ, in order for us, through Him, to survive that ”great wrath” of the enemy.

I am reminded here of Colossians 3:1-4:
“… Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.”
Sin, suffering and death will give way to eternal salvation and uninterrupted safety with Christ; for our God is faithful and true.

  4. He was concerned about the churches because they were not necessarily aware of the trials that they would have, but that they also understand both despite what happens the battle is worth it

  5. Christ would not want us to back down from evil but to pursue those with the armor that he provides. It is not uncommon for the one that attacks our response witnessing is really looking for the truth
