A Tribute to Our Community Service Volunteers — 5 Comments

  1. Before my health gave out, I would go to our Dorcas building, but not often enough. I wish I had volunteered more than the miserly amount of time I had. I remember the times I did as being something that gave me a sense of satisfaction.
Al the times I had wished I could do something for someone w/o being paid, was right there and I was to blind to realize it.
Thank you for this article reminding me.

  2. This got me thinking about why Peter had to 'put them out' before praying over Dorcas's sleeping body. Peter knew a truth that they would not understand, he wanted their wailing and tears to be of joy not sorrow. Could we do the same? Our loved ones in his service are not gone forever, Jesus sees their talents. In special cases we might ask their ministry to continue for a season...

  3. Michael in reading the SS lesson a similar question was ask. Why did Jesus do the things that are mentioned. My answer was two fold. Isiah 55:8,and my opinion regarding Peter is, there are other instances of people raised from the dead in silence without being distracted or disturbed by anyone else. One that comes to mind, Elijah. 1kings17:17-24.

    • Right you are! But can we show the world the joy of Christianity is not only in passing the judgment, but working in the vineyard? He removed the wailers, the doubters and the fearful. He gave the girl the restoration so she might be a blessing to those others.

Peter gave the message to those families that life in service is more powerful than sleeping in the grave. Whatever people believe about death, that is a powerful truth.

  4. I love one thing about the woman named Dorcas. I like the way the Bible says it, she was a ‘disciple’. That shows us that it’s not about us being in the inner circle that qualifies us to be a disciple .A disciple follows the footsteps of the leader. You would say, if Jesus saw the needs of the people, what would He have done and do it. We should never neglect alms giving. Yes some might say, the cost of living is high, I don’t have much to give others. It’s not about how much you have. Let us check this closely. What did Dorcas have? The Bible says she was making garments for the poor, meaning she had a thread, material, needle or maybe others can say a sewing machine. These things we might be having them in our houses and we think it’s not much, let’s put them to good use and be a blessing to other people.Meet the needs of other people with whatever you have.
