Inside Story: Faith and the Pigs

Sabbath School Net Posted on August 23, 2012 by SSNET StaffApril 11, 2015avatar

“You are going to do what?” demanded Mitalyn’s husband. “I’m going to become an Adventist,” she said as firmly as she could. Mitalyn knew that her husband, her neighbors, and almost everyone she knew would object to her decision. But she couldn’t wait any longer. Mitalyn had grown up believing that Adventists were bad people … Continue reading –>

Thursday: Comfort One Another (1 Thess. 4:13, 17, 18)

Sabbath School Net Posted on August 22, 2012 by SSNET StaffMay 27, 2015avatar

Read 1 Thessalonians 4:13, 17, 18. What is the ultimate purpose of this passage about the second coming of Jesus? As we said earlier, the purpose of prophecy is not to satisfy our curiosity about the future but to teach us how to live today. For Paul, the order of final events has practical implications for everyday Christian … Continue reading –>

Wednesday: Rising in Christ (1 Thess. 4:15, 16)

Empty Graves After the Second Coming

In 1 Thessalonians 4:13-5:11, Paul builds on the earthly teachings of Jesus. There are more than a dozen parallels between these end-time passages and the sayings of Jesus recorded in Matthew, Mark, and Luke. But when Paul talks about the “word of the Lord” in 1 Thessalonians 4:15 (NKJV), he is referring to a saying of Jesus that did … Continue reading –>

Tuesday: Dying and Rising (1 Thess. 4:14)

Person Rising from Grave

Read 1 Thessalonians 4:14. What hope does Paul offer regarding those who have died? In verse 14 Paul offers the solution to the problem of hopeless grief. In the original language he describes the believers who have died as having “fallen asleep through Jesus.” While falling asleep is a common metaphor for death in New Testament times, the … Continue reading –>

Monday: Hopeless Grief (1 Thess. 4:13)

Sabbath School Net Posted on August 19, 2012 by SSNET StaffMay 27, 2015avatar

According to 1 Thessalonians 4:13, what was Paul’s purpose for writing verses 13-18? Why should this text mean so much for us today? Why were the Thessalonian believers grieving as if they had no hope? A major factor was probably the short period that Paul was with them. We know that Paul talked about the death and … Continue reading –>

Sunday: The Situation in Thessalonica

Sabbath School Net Posted on August 18, 2012 by SSNET StaffMay 27, 2015avatar

Read 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18. List the clues in this passage that point to the false beliefs in the Thessalonian church that brought unnecessary grief to those who held them. Within the Judaism of Paul’s day, a variety of views regarding the end time were prevalent. One of these viewpoints, in some form, crept into the Thessalonian … Continue reading –>

Sabbath: The Dead in Christ (1 Thess. 4:13-18)

Sabbath School Net Posted on August 17, 2012 by SSNET StaffMay 27, 2015avatar

Memory Text: “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first” (1 Thessalonians 4:16). Further Study: Living Holy Lives

Sabbath School Net Posted on August 16, 2012 by SSNET StaffMay 27, 2015avatar

“Love is a pure and holy principle, but lustful passion will not admit of restraint and will not be dictated to or controlled by reason. It is blind to consequences; it will not reason from cause to effect.”-Ellen G. White, Mind, Character, and Personality, vol. 1, p. 222. “[Love] is pure and holy. But the passion … Continue reading –>

Inside Story: Finding the Way Home, part 2

Sabbath School Net Posted on August 16, 2012 by SSNET StaffApril 11, 2015avatar

“Take your things, and don’t come back,” Mother said as Verusca opened the door. Verusca paused and then said softly, “I’ll collect my things when I return from church.” She hurried toward the church, crying. As Verusca entered the church, a woman was telling the mission story of a girl who faced trials similar to … Continue reading –>

Thursday: Mind Your Own Business (1 Thess. 4:9-12)

Sabbath School Net Posted on August 15, 2012 by SSNET StaffMay 27, 2015avatar

Read 1 Thessalonians 4:9-12 and 3:11-13. What aspects of the earlier passage does Paul reaffirm in today’s text? The Greeks had a number of words for “love,” two of which are found in the New Testament. Eros (not found in the New Testament) is the Greek word from which we get the word erotic. It refers to the sexual side of … Continue reading –>

At a camp meeting 40 years later, I happened to see Dr. I. demonstrating some kind of health product, if I remember correctly. (In my mind, I see only the image of him, much older, but still looking much like he did when I was a student, with a friend by my side.) I lingered a little but did not introduce myself. I briefly wondered whether he recognized me. I’m fairly sure that I was as recognizable to him as he was to me.

Had he changed? Or did he still feel superior in his “humility”? Should I talk to him? I didn’t know how to approach him, and was busy with friends. I still don’t know whether I should have said something. (Maybe I’m just a coward.)

If God wants him to see my story, his and my identity are clear enough in this post, that God can direct him to it.
