Transmission and Translation of the English Bible

Sabbath School Net Posted on May 18, 2020 by Maurice AshtonApril 18, 2026avatar
A detailed view of various King James Version Bibles, highlighting religious imagery.

In this current lesson study sequence, we are urged to use “Scripture only” as the basis for our faith. Most of us in this forum probably take the Bible as we read it today for granted. We may argue over which version is best, but we largely accept Scripture as the basis of our faith. … Continue reading –>

Tuesday: The Sabbath and Creation

The Fourth Commandment

Today the seventh-day Sabbath is heavily under attack in secular society and in religious communities. This fact can be seen in the work schedules of global corporations; in the attempted change of the calendar in many European countries designating Monday as the first day of the week and Sunday as the seventh day; and by … Continue reading –>

Monday: The Days of Creation

Creation, represented in concentric circles, with an African Adam and Eve.

In recent years there has been a trend to view the Creation week as non-literal, as a metaphor, a parable, or even a myth. This has arisen in the wake of the theory of evolution, which assumes long ages of time to account for the development of life on planet Earth. What does the Bible … Continue reading –>

Jesus Protecting Earth

Read Genesis 1:1. What deep truths are revealed here? The Bible opens with the most sublime and profound words, words that are simple but that simultaneously contain a measureless depth when carefully studied. In fact, the greatest questions of philosophy regarding who we are, why we are here, and how we got here are answered by … Continue reading –>

What did Jesus Mean by “Fulfill” and “Till” in Matthew 5:17-18?

Sabbath School Net Posted on May 14, 2020 by William EarnhardtMay 20, 2020avatar
Love is the heart of the Law.

Seventh-day Adventists are familiar with something Jesus said in the sermon on the mount. “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.  For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one  jot or one  tittle will by … Continue reading –>

“I Have Chills!” By Kamil Metz Liz was busy working in her home in Houston, Texas, when suddenly something told her to be still for a moment. Just then, she heard a knock at the door. When she opened the door, however, she didn’t see anyone. David Pano had already left her porch and was … Continue reading –>

The largest units in Scripture are books of the Bible. Biblical books were written for different purposes and in different settings. Some served as prophetic messages; others were compilations, like the Psalms. There are historical books like 1 and 2 Kings, and there are letters to various churches, such as those written by Paul and … Continue reading –>

Sabbath School Net Posted on May 12, 2020 by Corinne KnopperMay 12, 2020avatar

There are several hymns that could be used as a theme for this Second Quarter of 2020. Here are just two, the first being Hymn 272, Give Me the Bible, followed by Hymn 277, For Your Holy Book We Thank You. Thank you to the ladies who messaged in and suggested that we could also … Continue reading –>

Tuesday: Repitition, Word Patterns and Meaning

Sabbath School Net Posted on May 11, 2020 by Sabbath School LessonMay 11, 2020avatar
A monk writes on a parchment page in candlelight.

In Hebrew thought, there are a number of ways to express ideas that reinforce meaning and emphasize the importance of concepts. Unlike European languages, Hebrew contains no punctuation marks in the original language, so the language structure developed other ways to communicate such ideas. Read Genesis 1:26-27; and Isaiah 6:1-3. What words are repeated in these passages? … Continue reading –>

At a camp meeting 40 years later, I happened to see Dr. I. demonstrating some kind of health product, if I remember correctly. (In my mind, I see only the image of him, much older, but still looking much like he did when I was a student, with a friend by my side.) I lingered a little but did not introduce myself. I briefly wondered whether he recognized me. I’m fairly sure that I was as recognizable to him as he was to me.

Had he changed? Or did he still feel superior in his “humility”? Should I talk to him? I didn’t know how to approach him, and was busy with friends. I still don’t know whether I should have said something. (Maybe I’m just a coward.)

If God wants him to see my story, his and my identity are clear enough in this post, that God can direct him to it.
