Are Adventists Old-Covenant Christians? (Part 5)

Sabbath School Net Posted on September 26, 2017 by Marcos David TorresJuly 22, 2024avatar
Christ Standing Before Mercy Seat

In the previous post, we identified where Adventism fits in relation to covenant theology. The conclusion placed Adventism closest to the views espoused by the 2nd London Baptist Confession, a covenantal framework that falls under the tradition of the Presbyterians, Congregationalists, and Baptists known as “Covenantalism.” The post concluded by sharing some points on how this … Continue reading –>

Key Thought: True religion is based on the condition of the heart. When it is surrendered to God, a person will more and more reflect the character of Christ as they grow in faith. Lesson 14, September 30, 2017 1. Have a volunteer read Galatians 6:12,13. a. Ask class members to share a thought on … Continue reading –>

Old and New Covenants

“But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world” (Gal. 6:14) . Having exposed the motives that prompted some to insist on circumcision, Paul presents his gospel message to the Galatians one final time, though only … Continue reading –>

14 Boasting in the Cross – Discussion starters

Sabbath School Net Posted on September 24, 2017 by Joyce GriffithSeptember 26, 2017Joyce Griffith

The only thing worth boasting about. Can you imagine a bit of a twinkle in Paul’s eye as he proclaims: “Far be it from me to boast except in the Lord Jesus Christ”? Indeed, is there anything worth boasting about except Christ Jesus our Savior? Doesn’t Jesus deserve every word of praise we can muster, … Continue reading –>

Monday: Boasting in the Flesh

Suffering for Christ

Read Galatians 6:12-13. What is Paul saying in these verses? Although Paul has hinted previously about the agenda and motivation of his opponents (see Gal. 1:7, Gal. 4:17), his remarks in Galatians 6:12-13 are the first explicit comments he makes about his opponents. He describes them as wanting “to make a good showing in the flesh” (ESV). The phrase “a good … Continue reading –>

Singing with Inspiration – Lesson 14: Boasting in the Cross

Sabbath School Net Posted on September 24, 2017 by Corinne KnopperSeptember 24, 2017avatar

Our Memory Text for this weeks’ lesson study suggests: Hymn 312, “Jesus Keep Me Near the Cross” along with Hymn 307, “I Am Coming to the Cross”. Sunday’s lesson states: “He simply cannot put the pen down until he pleads with the Galatians once more to turn from their foolish ways” and I am so … Continue reading –>

Sunday: Paul’s Own Hand

By Paul's Own Hand

Compare Paul’s closing remarks in Galatians 6:11-18 to the final remarks he makes in his other letters. In what way is the ending of Galatians similar to and different from them? (See the final remarks in Romans, 1 Corinthians and 2 Corinthians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and 1 Thessalonians and 2 Thessalonians.) Paul’s closing remarks are not always uniform, … Continue reading –>

This study on Galatians has been intense. … Continue reading –>

Friday: Further Thought – Gospel and Church

Spectacles on Bible

Further Thought: “The Spirit of God keeps evil under the control of conscience. When man exalts himself above the influence of the Spirit, he reaps a harvest of iniquity. Over such a man the Spirit has less and less influence to restrain him from sowing seeds of disobedience. Warnings have less and less power over … Continue reading –>

The Gospel and the Church – Hit the Mark

A modern rendition of the prodigal son returning to the open arms of his father. His mother waves in the background. Front yard of house with white picket fence and open gate. Harry Anderson painting.

I’m writing this week’s post from Rome, the ancient city whose past intersects with the life of Paul. It was from Rome that Paul penned the letter to the church in Galatia. Unlike myself and my wife, Paul was not in Rome by his own choice. His presence there was due to the conflicts he … Continue reading –>

The Gospel and the Church – Teaching Plan

The Church

Key Thought: When the law of Christ is fulfilled in our lives, we will recognize our weaknesses and care for those who are fallen and burdened. Lesson 13, September 23, 2017 1. Have a volunteer read Galatians 6:1. a. Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text … Continue reading –>

Sowing and Reaping

(Gal. 6:6-10) In Galatians 6:7, the word translated “mocked” (mukterizo) occurs only here in the New Testament, though it often appears in the Greek translation of the Old Testament. It literally means “to turn up one’s nose in contempt.” In the Old Testament it typically refers to the despising of God’s prophets (2 Chron. 36:16, Jer. 20:7), and … Continue reading –>

At a camp meeting 40 years later, I happened to see Dr. I. demonstrating some kind of health product, if I remember correctly. (In my mind, I see only the image of him, much older, but still looking much like he did when I was a student, with a friend by my side.) I lingered a little but did not introduce myself. I briefly wondered whether he recognized me. I’m fairly sure that I was as recognizable to him as he was to me.

Had he changed? Or did he still feel superior in his “humility”? Should I talk to him? I didn’t know how to approach him, and was busy with friends. I still don’t know whether I should have said something. (Maybe I’m just a coward.)

If God wants him to see my story, his and my identity are clear enough in this post, that God can direct him to it.
