Did Samuel Appear to King Saul After He Died? — 6 Comments

  1. Listen

"Bind up the testimony and seal up the law (Deut 18:10-13) among my disciples (2 Cor 10:3-5; John 15:14). And I will wait on the Lord, who hides his face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for him (Deut 4:30-31) [not like Saul did! 1Cor 10:6,11]. ... Behold, when they shall say to you, seek to them that have familiar spirits, and to wizards that peep and that mutter, SHOULD NOT A PEOPLE SEEK TO THEIR GOD? [why seek] for the living to the dead? To the law (once more Deut 18:10-13), and to the testimony (the rest of the scripture), if they speak not according to THIS Word (the Bible, in otherwords "contrary passages?"), it is because there is no light in them. That is Isaiah 8:16-20

See from Eden, when God's law pronunces a clear "Thou shalt not" (just like King Saul, an agent of God had driven away those with mediums), the devil comes, disguises himself (2 Cor 11:14) and acts the part of "contrary passages". The Bible teaches nothing else other than a controversy btn truth and deceiption. Thx

  2. It has been quite a privilege to have extra time beyond a normal morning, on Thanksgiving, to browse on EG White estate app and stumble upon the writings of J.N. Andrews (under Adventist Pioneer Library). He is no stranger to Adventist circles and just by the mention of his name, we know that he is a trusted servant of God. I thank William for bringing this timely topic about contrary passages, particularly on one that wasn't expounded on the sabbath school lessons. The subject of the Witch of Endor is very confusing to me for it sounds like the presence of Samuel in the story is apparently a known fact. Below are just two points I have gathered and it's already a huge eye opener for me, I hope this will help us on our continuous search for truths and how to answer those who ask us of our belief.

"But there is one important fact that settles this question of Samuel’s resurrection. Had Samuel been present in his own flesh and bones, and not as a matter of enchantment or sorcery, Saul would have seen him as well as the woman. That Saul could not see him is convincing proof that Samuel was not raised from the dead. He must have been raised-if raised at all-by God or by Satan. But the devil cannot raise the dead; and it is certain that the God of Heaven would not raise his servant in answer to Satanic incantations."

“So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the Lord, even against the word of the Lord, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to inquire of it; and inquired not of the Lord: therefore he slew him, and turned the kingdom unto David the son of Jesse.”
    1 Chro 10:13,14

It is worthy of observation that this passage names the familiar spirit as the one that Saul conversed with and says not one word about Samuel, in whose form and dress he came, and under whose name he completed the ruin of Saul. It was the familiar spirit that he inquired of, and that held discourse with him. This is made very manifest by quoting this text without the supplied words: “For asking of a familiar spirit to inquire. And inquired not of the Lord.” It was the familiar spirit, therefore, and not the Lord through Samuel, with whom Saul conversed.

  3. Satan causes those to appear who went into the grave unprepared.

I have read the above statement as stated in your article above. What is the interpretation of Satan causing them to appear? How is it that they have gone into the grave “unprepared”

  4. The word, "perceived," comes from the Hebrew word, "yada." It is overwhelmingly translated as "know." I don't think it's possible to make a point that he only perceived in his own mind that it was Samuel. It could have easily been translated that, Saul "knew" it was Samuel.

    • That's fine, Michael. Saul thought he knew it was Samuel. But if you mean to say it really was Samuel, then Satan has the power to bring up God's servant from the grave, disturbing his sleep. Also, there was something to be gained by visiting a sorceress. Saul really was able to hear from Samuel by so doing.

      Is that not absurd?
